Hi everyone,

I have a family member coming to visit and she is currently in the middle of the process of adopting a child. While she is here she asked if I knew of any places where she could volunteer for a few days to help with children or babies. I haven't done any volunteer work here so I'm not sure....is there anywhere to volunteer if you're only here a week? Has anyone had any contact with an orphanage or children's home that needs volunteers?

I already searched the forums and followed up on the places listed, just wondering if anyone has recent information.

Thanks!!

Other than some paid experiences, probably not. It can be disruptive for someone to come for such a short time. If she wants to help, the best way would be to get in touch with a "comedor" (soup kitchen) and buy them a lot of food, especially fresh fruits and vegetables which they normally don´t have, eggs, meat, chicken, etc. Books and toys and clothes will also work.
I worked a lot in Villa 31 for a film and most of the long term volunteers didn´t like them coming in, it kind of caused more problems.

Does your relative speak Spanish ???

There's the children's Hospital Garrahan http://www.garrahan.gov.ar/ and also Hospital Elizalde http://www.elizalde.gov.ar/ Both are walking distance from the Constitucion subway stop.
The latter one used to be called Casa Cuna. It was originally run as an orphanage. Founded in 1779 it is the oldest in the Americas. It is now also a children's hospital.
