Can't disagree, but has the author spent any time in San Francisco or LA? We are teeming with homeless that live among the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city. They aren't just rummaging through trash to look for things to sell. They literally sleep on the streets in tent cities blocks away from $2 million condos.

Yes, in San Francisco one of the huge current problems is human excrement in the streets. The homeless have no where to go but the streets. Kinda makes the dog poop here seem not so bad.

The social services are overwhelmed by demand and under funded. There are not enough shelters to house the massive homeless population. And shelters don't solve the problem, they are just a bed for the night. The cost of living in San Francisco is the second highest next to New York. There are not enough resources to serve the mentally ill or ptsd sufferers. This is pretty much true in every city in the States. Los Angeles has block after block of people living in cardboard boxes on the sidewalk. For the working poor, homelessness is often a paycheck away.

I thought SF was the #1 most expensive, even more than NYC. Housing seems more expensive anyway.
I'm surprised that SF with such a progressive government doesn't do more for the homeless. Maybe they need to raise city taxes.

Every major city in the US is overrun with homeless these days. Seattle has 10,000 sleeping on the streets. LA, 50,000. Las Vegas and Boston- 6000 each. DC- 7000. NYC- approx 80,000.
Many of these people are drunks or drug addicts, or mentally ill, or just ill. Many of them have jobs, or pension or veteran checks- its just not enough to rent an apartment.
In many parts of the USA, with first, last, and deposit, it costs 3 to 5 thousand dollars to get in to a 1200 dollar a month single room apartment. And, of course, you need an address and a job, or you wont be considered to rent.

Buenos Aires is a clean, quiet, modern city compared to stepping over human feces while being ranted at by cursing heroin addicts.

80,000 homeless in NYC? WOW. What about the big cities -- Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Philadelphia? Is the problem as serious there?
