I need to host a website for a small business here in BA. Anyone have experience with local web hosting or should I just consider using one of the dozens listed on google that could be located anywhere on the planet? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Host in the US. webhostingtalk.com best place to research a reliable web host ("reliability" being the key word here).

Definitely host outside of Argentine (ie. in the US). I tried large web hosting company here in Argentina and there was loads of downtime.

Get your free '.com.ar' domain here: http://www.nic.ar/

My socio wants to use Fibertel because we are using them for internet access. I think I would vote against Fibertel.

ISP does not equal web host, please explain to your socio (?). Use a specialised hosting company.

Same as you don't host your site where you buy your domain, keep it all separate just in case the shit hits the fan with your host (which can happen).

If your socio still argues with you, ask them what experience they have with website development and setting up. Then tell them that someone with 15 years experience in the industry recommended using a specialist web hosting company based in the US. Lie and tell them I'm Argentinian if that helps to shut them up. ;)

If your socio is happy with fibertel and their reliability why dont you just host your own website/email.. Its not overly complicated to setup a webserver and register a domain name... You just need a static IP, which i think you get with your internet cable connection by default in ARG..

For shared hosting which is what you're looking for i suspect (not a heavy traffic site?)

I would go for www.hostgator.com . I was using them for multiple sites that were getting 10-15k uniques a day before i started to have problems with the server loads.

Note that you need to have a DNI (or have a friend with one) to get a domain name here. But once you have that, it's free!

As for hosting companies, here's another vote for HostGator - I recently moved all my sites to them (after suffering through years with iPower.com - stay away!) I couldn't be happier with HostGator - they transferred all my files, sites, blogs, and emails for free, and have continually answered all my nagging questions quickly and efficiently.
I did a lot of research before choosing them, and the other top rated companies I almost chose were Bluehost, DreamHost, LiquidWeb, and Hosting Matters. I'm sure you'd be happy with any of them, and they're all competitively priced.
