We’ve got an unexpected week of vacation coming up in the middle of the month, and wanted to go somewhere new, but not crazy far from BA. Definitely wanting to avoid expensive and annoying flights. We’ve been at the coast by Pinamar, and the weather there is mostly terrible lately. We know coastal Uruguay is packed this time of year. We’re open to taking the ferry and heading somewhere else in Uruguay, although we’ve been to the Colonia area already. Happy to stay in Argentina too. Any favorite spots to share that would work for a relaxing getaway?

Thanks Neil. I’m wondering a couple of things…doesn’t La Paloma get a lot of spillover this time of year from Punta del Este? We’re definitely wanting something chill and not super expensive, so thought we likely needed to avoid the coast. Also, could you easily manage getting there and around without a car?

I’ve never been but would like to go to Tandil and sierra de la Ventana

If you go let me know how it is 😀

Yes, it could be busier ,and yes a car rental is required....!

I have been to Tandil twice. It’s a decent small city famous for tennis and cuchillos artesanales. Stayed at an amazing campo style hotel, Hosteria de la Cascada. Fabulous hotel with a great restaurant. There are some seriously good restaurants in the city as well. The hotel was kinda mismanaged because they don’t create an adults only area and you have to put up with all the kids’ noises. It won’t be a peaceful trip at this time of the year with a lot of families. I got kids as well but I totally respect the right to have a quiet holiday.

For what it's worth, I was reading last night that La Nacion confirmed what we all suspected: Brazil is much cheaper than the coast in Argentina.

I've been lucky to visit several places within Argentina and nearby, considering the time of year I'd avoid the North and Iguazu, maybe head south to Patagonia (Bariloche, Calafate, or Ushuaia), beaches of Santa Catarina in Brazil, or Villa Carlos Paz in Cordoba.

Given the last minute travel/insane prices in Argentina everything is going to be expensive, so set your expectations accordingly.

I appreciate the info and recs. We have been to Tandil (nice, but we’ve seen it), Carlos Paz and all of the locales in Patagonia. We seriously considered Brazil, but the price of flights and the fact that it’s packed right now just doesn’t make it worth it for 5-7 days. I’d be tempted by La Paloma, but again, the crowds. We spent a Christmas 15 years ago near Maldonado and Piriapolis. I don’t remember much about it, since we were with friends with a pool. Anything inland from Colonia? We would like to stay away from needing to fly or rent a car. Indeed, it could be an impossible dream, but here’s to still hoping.
Pinamar prices are insane. For anyone tempted, I would look elsewhere. We’ve been coming here for more than 20 years, but we’ll take a break from it in the future.

I’m off to Cariló tonight but only because some family have rented a house and we’ll stay with them.
Prices are indeed outrageous!

Carilo probably the best place in Argentina. Very very small. But the food is great and I think they have the best pizza in Argentina in Carilo. You will see the place. It was a small restaurant on the side but now they have enormously expanded. Forgot the name but you can’t miss it. Go to Rada Beach if you can. They got good food also and the beach.
