Why Argentina's public universities are paralyzed by protests

After 11 months in office, Argentina’s right-wing President Javier Milei has fulfilled his flagship pledge to eliminate the country’s monumental deficits by shrinking the public payroll, slashing subsidies and holding already low wages of state workers below inflation.

Higher Education isn't free, taxpayers pay for it. The Argentinians that don't attend, pay with their taxes. Some pay for University Education when they will never finish High School..??

In Argentina college education is free for all. Even for the foreigners. An Argentine taxpayer paying for another Argentine’s college education is understandable. In the end educating the population is a national investment and someone who won’t even go to high school will benefit from an educated fellow citizen. But paying for a foreigner’s college education is so not ok and it doesn’t make any sense. Milei basically doesn’t want to subsidise foreign students’ expenses. There are a lot of students across Latam getting free education at AR colleges. Less student means lesser academic personnel. These people don’t want to go work for the private sector even for the private colleges so they’re holding demonstrations. Milei is doing the right thing for the country here.

Note: UBA and Public Universities in Argentina are free ONLY for permanents residents with Argentine DNI. Foreign residents have the same rights as citizens.

I know quite a few Venezuelanos and Colombians who are here for college education and when I asked why, they were all saying; good education for free. I know a Turkish guy going to UBA for Spanish language education, not college and he pays zero as well. He was talking about having a masters degree at UBA and it was free.

May sound repetitive,... but bear in mind that all foreigners (Colombians, Venezuelans, etc.) that are legal residents of this country have the same rights as citizens,i.e free higher education.

Nope these guys came here to study. They’re not legal permanent residents. They are legal though. But again, Milei doesn’t want to pay for anyone who’s not from Argentina. Which makes sense to me! California doesn’t pay from Nevadan!

If you become a legal California resident the fees at UCLA, are the ones applicable to California residents.

There is a legislative proposal to require tuition payments for non residents.


One of the strongest points of the proposed regulations was the implementation of fees for all those foreigners who, without residence or settlement, want to study some higher education degree (university and tertiary). In detail, the legislative proposal covered "state-managed higher education" institutions and national universities, and left out of the fee payment those native Argentine students and foreign legal residents in the country.

(Only Argentina born are eligible for free higher education ?)

What was first chicken or the egg? Don't people come here to study and become residents because they are students here?
