    In search of banking info

we have pensionista visas, no job in Argentina, and Galicia opened a dollar account for us, no problem. We do have DNI's, but I would assume his argentine wife does as well. But, while I can transfer money into my account by western union or wire transfer, I think its harder to get dollars OUT...

    In search of banking info

Argentine banks are essentially firewalled by current banking laws. An argentine branch of a global bank can not access your foreign accounts the way they can in different European countries. You have to do wire transfers between your own bank to and from Argentina in most cases.

    Where to sell fine Gold?

Actually big head benjamins. Argentines keep liquid wealth in paper $100 dollar US bills. Estimates vary, but there is no question that Argentines possess at least $200 billion, and possibly as much as $400 billion in US paper money. Culturally and historically this is much more entrenched than...

    Making friends while visiting

there is a gigantic queer art/fashion/music scene here. lots of curators, artists, performers, clubs, bands, and more. At the Pride day, there are usually a million people. Literally. There is some techno here, but argentines mostly listen to Argentine music, djs, and bands.

60 minutes segment last night on the death flights

I recommend going to the ESMA museum. Its very heavy, but important, and its the actual location where people were imprisoned and tortured, then taken direct to the airplanes once a week. Really powerful, and worth a visit to understand what happened. More visceral than youtube, the entire...

A history of children’s carousels in Argentina

Interesting article but it dates to 2006. I have a friend who is 3 rd or 4 th generation calesita family. He doesn’t build new ones, but he maintains some and makes new parts that are otherwise unavailable. Next time I see him I will have to ask about the current situation.

Rentista passive income through irrevocable trust?

One thing to consider is that migraciones can and does change the rules whenever they feel like it. We first were required merely to show proof of SS payments, for our pensionista visa. Then, with zero advance notice, one month they instituted the transfer to argentine bank rule. Then, they...

Chaos in the city: a blackout left more than 600,000 users without power

I have owned an apartment here since 2007. There have been power cuts pretty much every summer since then. It totally depends on the weather. A few years ago, there was a very hot summer and they were burning tires in the street after 3 days of no power in Pomeya. If you read the article Iinked...

Chaos in the city: a blackout left more than 600,000 users without power

At least 600,000 people were affected. 2 big 220,000 volt transformers tripped in the aging Edesur grid, and then there were numerous more local outages. When everybody has their air cons on full bore, it overloads the capacity. Since Menem privatized the electric companies in the 90s, they have...

    Coffee and cake prices

I dont eat cake or drink coffee. (Mate is up, close to double, though) But I do get some laundry done. I generally hand wash t shirts and shorts and socks, but my local, around the corner is still doing a big bag that is well over a kilo, for between 8000 and 10,000 pesos. I cant say I weigh my...

Need suggestions - Credit Card in Argentina for citizen

I will retract my statement, then, as I am out of date. I use US credit cards, and an Argentine debit card, which is a combo that works well for me.

Need suggestions - Credit Card in Argentina for citizen

Another thing to consider is a "credit rating" is not the desirable, and common, thing that it is in the states. Mortgages to buy homes are quite rare, and they have adjustable interest rates that would scare the pants off any US buyer. Not many people qualify for loans, either for cars or...

I Went To See A Band...

Finally, the main event was a rearrangement of Mas' drumkit into a smaller but more eclectic setup, allowing room for a pair of samplers for Lida, and an electronic drum for Chancha. Lida came out in full Lida Regalia- she is well known for her modern takes on traditional Afro Columbian and...
