The horse is just about dead here, but... Idealista is not the only source to find rentals in Madrid. There are three other websites that I know about, and surely many more that I don't. There are also agencies, other non-real estate centered websites, friends, co-workers, bulletin boards, etc...

A cursory check on Idealista shows 19 pages of apartments under 1K in Madrid, starting at €500. Methinks there's more to her story.
