    Welcome to Venezuela

Actually the discussion by the OP who started the thread was over concern that Argentina is becoming more like Venezuela. Then another poster said hey look at this survey it not that bad there. My response look at another index by the UN measuring the same things and they are at the bottom...

    Welcome to Venezuela

Sounds like your a fan of Hugo. Maybe you could move there and report back to us on how good life is, maybe you could pop over to Cuba as well as Fidel seems to be Hugo's inspiration. Like I said before with things clearly deteriorating on a daily basis there and all illusions are quickly fading...

Fun Betting Pool: When will the next crisis hit Argentina?

MorganF, you stole my date! I think after the election there will be a big hangover. There will be a few months where the government tries to avert disaster with conditions worsening daily. The lid can be kept on for a while but the chickens come to roost about six months into 2012.

    Welcome to Venezuela

Ok then how do you explain the disparity between this and the U.N. index? Perhaps in Venezuela people don't feel 100% free to express their true opinions? Perhaps they fear there might be consequences to answering the questions to honestly, or perhaps they really are just happy folks and the...

    Welcome to Venezuela

I think you are saying that in a democracy the people get the government they deserve. I agree.

    Welcome to Venezuela

Yes the Gallup poll is a telephone feel good interview. Doubt very many of the really poor in Venezuela have telephones, so I wonder how valid the survey is. The U.N. index is measuring the same thing and is a lot more comprehensive and objective.

    Welcome to Venezuela

And voting and voting and voting left and waiting for things to get better which for some reason never do. I guess this doesn't apply to Eastern Europe who had the benefits of socialism for many decades. I believe I am correct that since all these countries that overthrew their socialist...

    Welcome to Venezuela

Venezuelanlysis.com is not exactly a fair and balanced news organization. If you look at the U.N. Human Development Index, probably a lot more comprehensive measure of actual conditions, Venezuela ranks 75th out of 85 countries and shows the biggest drop in the index 17 points of any country...

    Everyone is Middle class?

Ok, I did a little more checking and now understand what's meant by the Kansas effect. I guess if you buy this then all these people are dumb yokels voting against their own self-interest in not voting for higher taxes on the rich. I guess this is possible but it doesn't seem very likely to me...

    Everyone is Middle class?

I read the article and it says people miss-perceive their income standing and that this leads to some sort of public policy implications(no examples given). I found the article fuzzy and sort of nebulous as a result. I guess it has something to do with income distribution i.e. wealth...

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

Well if this is true and you have had several jobs why aren't you building on that? What's the fixation with B.A.? If you were moving ahead in several jobs in Europe why move to Argentina? If you have international experience that's in demand why don't you look for a position where you can have...

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

Some very good points particularly on an empty CV, I had thought the same thing but you said much better than I could. I guess I'm old fashioned to me it seems by your early thirties you ought to have some direction in your life. Nothing wrong with coming to B.A., but coming with just a vague...

Incandescent Lightbulbs in Arg: Now Illegal?

Incandescent light bulbs are history and are being phased out even in the U.S.(in a year or so you won't be able to buy them). They are inefficient and obsolete. You might want to keep a few to show to future generations.

    Sending Packages from The US

I am not sure if you could do this or not. If you brought it with you on a flight no problem. There's a distinction made between personal baggage and something shipped separately. You could be in for the hassle of your life getting it into the country. By the time you pay the cost to ship it...

Article on American Expats in Argentina on local news

I agree but it depends on where you live both in Argentina and the U.S. for real estate taxes. Also if people paid all the taxes they are suppose to in Argentina they would probably be shocked. Anyway you can get some fantastic deals in the states right now. My mother died a few years ago and we...

Article on American Expats in Argentina on local news

But this is not what the article is arguing. It states retired people from the U.S. are moving to B.A. because their money goes further. This is simply not true. The average cost of living of the U.S. and B.A. is about the same, I would argue a retiree would spend more in B.A. due to health care...

Article on American Expats in Argentina on local news

You can make all kinds of arguments both ways. Cost of living in B.A. compared to the average American city is just about even. Of course in the U.S. cities are more generally more expensive versus the suburbs or smaller cities and towns, you could probably say the same about Argentina. But...

Article on American Expats in Argentina on local news

Well I am speaking on average in the U.S. there are always exceptions, however nobody moves to or stays in NYC because of the cost of living. I would think most people on a limited income like most retirees wouldn't consider NYC. Most cities or places in the U.S. the cost of living is close to...

Article on American Expats in Argentina on local news

I agree particularly with the 4th group retirees. You could live in Argentina a few years ago for less that in the states, I don't think that's the case today.

Argentina on the cusp of hyperinflation

I agree with just about everything you say. I don't think Argentina is on a sustainable path economically, I believe problems in China could be the trigger to an unraveling here. China's problem is that it is more or less a command economy that is doomed to major problems because command...
