Local cell phone plan or ???

Doesn't your plan provider in the US give you rates for Argentina? The way I see it, it'll cost you a fortune to use a US phone here. Best to get a local plan - and btw I wouldn't flash an iPhone in BsAs, it's a very sought after item as they can't be bought here

English on Sunday Euro 2012 (Against Italy)

This is of course a disguised invitation to discuss the SPL and TV access to Euro 2012 and can't be construed in any way as being from someone who just wants to meet up, have a few beers and enjoy the game....

    new to the board.. bored

For scotch you need to go to Scotland. In England you'll find warm, flat beer. And what I'd give for a pint of that stuff now (well not actually now cos it's 8am but you know what I mean :-) And there'll be plenty imbibed when England (cough) win Euro 2012 (cough) by beating Spain in the final...

    safety in BA

I think the OP has probably given up by now. Typical BAX - by the 3rd page it's reduced to personal slanging matches and insult-trading.

Is anyone going to Colonia anytime soon?

Steve can you clarify this? I went to Colonia 2 weeks ago and got a new 90 day stamp. Are you saying this has no value and that I'll still have to pay the fine when I exit? I understand the point that immigration can turn you away if they want, so going to Colonia has no guarantee of getting a...

Is anyone going to Colonia anytime soon?

You're welcome! And Eclair you have a point - they could also start refusing re-entry, or even slap on a fee. Anything could happen. Also, it's true that the situation is also different for anyone planning to stay for more than 180 days. When I re-entered Argentina, the officials checked every...

    You can come straight back.

Is anyone going to Colonia anytime soon?

Hi Paola Sorry I can't offer to go with you, but I went myself as recently as 2 weeks ago so hopefully can give you the heads up. I'm always wary of the 'stay here and pay the fine' argument for 2 reasons: 1. What if there's a massive overnight hike in the fine? Payable in USD? It's more than...

    A year in a Slum

I don't doubt Tom, but there's a lot of vagueness in his story. There are no specific anecdotes or descriptions of specific people. An anecdote can be immensely powerful. All there is is vague generalizing. There are also some inconsistencies: 1. If you have access to water, you have access to...

    Hot Sauce

Apologies for a partial hijack of this thread, but does anyone know where I can buy curry powder, garam masala, or curry sauces for cooking?

    Happy Argentina!!

That's a mathematical theory which personally I have no faith in. I once worked for a market research company and one of the biggest problems was ensuring that the data collected was from a representative sample, and that was with simple questions such as 'Do you prefer coffee or tea?', asked in...

    Happy Argentina!!

I can't believe people are arguing about this. It's just another meaningless, uncorroborated and biased survey. Here is the basis on which the results are calculated (quote): "samples of around 1000 individuals aged 15 or over in each of the countries" 1000? As far as our fair city is...

The Englishman who took 140 colectivos

That's how I got to know Barcelona, my last city of residence before BsAs. I'd pick a metro station, go there, wander around for a bit until I got bored, find a bus stop, get on the first bus that came along and stay on it until it passed through a place that looked interesting. If I had time...

    Irish guy moving to Ba

Culturally lacking? Are you kidding? BsAs has the 3rd largest theatre scene in the world, street tango, world-class football, is on the itinerary for most major world tours, has venues catering for just about every musical taste, plenty of museums...and as for 'most bars are empty until 11:30'...

    Irish guy moving to Ba

Hi James I've been teaching English here for three months now and have loved it. Having said that there are things you have to be careful of: 1) If I were you I'd try to get a job before you come here. The economic situation in Argentina is deteriorating and it wouldn't be easy to get a job on...

Richard Stallman, founder of the FSF, robbed in Argentina

One thing I've learned about this forum is that any post that goes beyond two pages becomes pointless, and overly personal, slagging-off which goes way beyond the original post. Calm down people! :)

    First post!

Eric, please think about these: It's Day One, and you're starting to fire off emails to companies for work. They start calling you-in Spanish. HR departments expect to deal with people who can speak their language, trust me, and they'll want a lot of information. Argentina is going into...
