    Wood photo frames

Yes! That's what I was going to recommend. It's a sweet little shop, called La Buena Madera: http://www.labuenamadera.com.ar/

    Getting US dollars Today

Seriously... for every tourist that has a smooth transaction, there's probably a story like this (from the TripAdvisor forum, week of March 1): "Just got back from BA last weekend. Took the 1030 pm CO flight to IAH on Saturday night. Assumed that we could exchange our pesos back to US$ at...

Free or Cheap Spanish Classes in BA

That's a very good rate. I've never taken a class at UBA, but other posters have commented on the quality and professionalism of their classes. To the OP, if your budget is that tight, remember there are many ways you can develop your Spanish without spending a dime (especially if you already...

    Exchanging Pesos in the US

Well, I said that back in September, I was told that I could buy up to USD $500 traveler's checks per month (never went ahead and did it, though.) But that was before the massive crackdown. At this point, since they are barring the flight of dollars in any way possible (from Western Union...

    Exchanging Pesos in the US

I went to the AmEx office back in September and got a bunch of info on that... if you have a DNI, there's no charge to buy or cash them in Argentina; if you don't have a DNI, there is a fee of 1.8% per check. They use the official rate of the day, and the monthly purchase limit is (was, at that...

    How is this area?

That's a few blocks from where I live. To be honest, I don't particularly like living in that neighborhood, and only do so because my partner owns our home. BUT it's not completely unbearable! The benefits of that location are the many bus stops and subway stations nearby, as well as being...

    Getting US dollars Today

I don't think there are many options anymore, other than the black market. I suppose you could go around to the banks, inquiring whether any are selling dollars, but honestly, why bother? Your landlady wants dollars; let her hunt them down. It's certainly not your problem; your hands are just as...

    Landlady & Deposit...potential problems..

Wow. They really do think that all foreigners are complete chumps/human ATM machines, don't they.

    Trouble using international credit cards

That's one thing I never had a problem with, using American debit or credit cards in Argentina. They always went through, whether or not I'd contacted the bank beforehand. Of course, the last time I used one there was in mid-January, so lord knows what could have changed since then.

    Gifts for kids

Are the girls in your older one's class into American Girl? I have an 8-year-old student who is absolutely obsessed, and so are all of her friends... if so, they'd probably love American Girl sticker sheets (and maybe Star Wars or superheroes for the boys?)

$$$ Stuck between a rock and an Argentine place...

Does anyone know if this applies to receiving $ in Argentina, or just sending it from? I need to send a small amount of cash (>100 euro) from Germany to an Argentine citizen in BA, and am wondering whether Western Union -- rip-off though it is -- would even be an option anymore.

    Gifts for kids

Alfajores and dulce de leche are always popular gift choices for Americans. I'd steer clear of any peanut butter candy for the kids; I have yet to meet an Argentine who has liked it (either describing it as "too strong" or being totally horrified by the idea of mixing PB with chocolate.) Maybe...

Prohibition on drawing from accounts in pesos from outside Argentina from April 3rd

Even those WITH credit cards won't be able to use them absolutely everywhere (yes, in the US plastic is more accepted than cash these days, but we're the extreme.). Many apartments and hostels in Europe accept cash only, for example, and stores often have a minimum purchase amount for credit...

    Crime hot-spots in the capital

David, since you and I live in the same neighborhood, let me recount this fun episode: a few weeks ago (the night before the tourist was killed, actually), around 10pm, my partner got off the bus on Callao and Mitre to walk the few blocks home. Turning onto Rodriguez Pena, she was suddenly...

Muslims (and Halal food) in BA ?

There's a very good, family-owned halal restaurant called La Alhambra in Palermo (on Charcas around Borges.) They would actually probably be able to recommend the name of a few halal food suppliers.

    Government-proposed ban on British imports

Seriously, my first thought was, "er... are there even any British goods left on the shelves?" Other than a dusty jar of curry paste I saw back in October...?

    US Television

Wow, are you sure Cuevana has been shut down in Argentina? I use it every day in Europe (just finished My Week With Marilyn, actually), but I'm surprised that it'd be non-functional in the country where it was created. Have you checked Series Yonkis and Vureel?

Moving from Intermediate to Advanced Spanish

Like anything else, practice makes perfect. You have to speak often enough so that it becomes automatic (like practicing a piano piece so much that you can play it without thinking.) And you need as much input as possible (even if it's just listening to your wife or kids converse with their...
