How much of a problem is the language barrier in your daily life as an expat?

I think in the average US city, definitely, (maybe not so much rural areas) you encounter, daily, a dozen or more different idiomas of english. I had a roommate long ago from Trinidad. His english was completely incomprehensible to me for a few weeks. We had an employee for a while from New...

Will there be Black Friday and where to buy home stuff?

I think most people prefer not to sleep under used sheets, but many of these suggestions are good for furniture, small appliances, and so on.

Argentina’s Economy Unexpectedly Shrank Amid Austerity Push

we dont actually have "dollarfied" prices. We have prices which are still defined by Peron era duties, taxes, customs and correo rules, and a built in layer of bribes, fees, sub contractors, and friction which was designed to impede imports, and, thus, supposedly support local business. MIlei...

How much of a problem is the language barrier in your daily life as an expat?

I find if you are obviously trying, argentines will be pretty willing to work with bad spanish, unlike, say, the French. And 9o% of the time hilo or soga works fine for actual strings. I buy and use a fair amount of string, and those two words get me in the ballpark.

Will there be Black Friday and where to buy home stuff?

Rodo is good for appliances. Mercado libre will show you what the lowest prices can be, but you can usually come pretty close with rodo or fra vega. Arredo is decent for bedding- they have branches all over, and have a range of price points. In Argentina if you really want to save money you...

$1 homes offered to American expats

the comment probably refers to the fact that suburban towns near Detroit have large arab american populations. There is no "sharia law" in Michigan, and, actually, a lot of arab americans voted for Trump as a statement against US government support of Israel. But Detroit itself is actually...

    It's a hyper-polluted city in a basket-case country - but I love it.

When I first came to BA, in 2007, it was stinkier. Most of the cabs were still Peugot 504 diesels, and the older colectivos put out huge clouds of black smoke too. But by 2010, the vast majority of taxis were CNG- mainly because the government has subsidized it, and the gas companies built CNG...

I had to laugh at “ hyper polluted”. Have you seen photos of Lahore recently? I lived in LA in the 80s, and BA is not comparable… Today, LA is 4 times worse air quality.

    Amazon is coming to town...

this article kind of dances around legality, tax rates and who pays them, and in short, is probably describing services that are quasi legal at best right now. Maybe they work, maybe they dont. No mention of how much more you pay than the intitial Amazon price. But aerobox, for instance, is...

    Amazon is coming to town...

Color me dubious. We have heard this kind of thing is coming for as long as I can remember- over ten years. But as far as I know, beyond announcing a plan to cut the import duty in half sometime in December, or maybe later, and now, announcing this- nothing has changed. Milei is really good at...

Argentine health system faces perfect storm amid Milei's austerity

I had a cab driver earlier this year, in his sixties at least, who worked two jobs- emergency room physician and cab driver. He said he could not survive on one, and the approximately 3 dollars an hour he made as a taxista was more than his hospital pay.

The minister taking a chainsaw to Argentina’s statute book

Yes, Peter Schiff- I am sure he would move to Argentina, learn fluent rioplatenese, spend a couple years to become a citizen, to earn the current equivalent of $42,000 usd per year…
