    ICANA-an English book library

These are both great tips and even after two years, I always forget about them. There is also Walrus books in San Telmo, which sells new and used English books. Very friendly and they will buy back the books you purchase when you are done with them - at a discount, of course.

Anybody know know a realtor? aka RENTAL HELP NEEDED

It really shouldn't be that hard, but landlords here are often jerks and try to screw foreigners - some will haggle, others just say that's the price - try offering less and see what happenes. I never quite understood why a landlord would prefer to have their apartment sit empty rather take a...

Best used bookstore in BA with large English selection?

Walrus (which has a nice selection) is in San Telmo, Estados Unidos 617. The owners are quite nice and they buy back the books you buy when you have read them. It is not that far from Peru/Boliver/Catedral subte stops (they are all the same, more or less, on different lines).

    Off to the 3 Guyanas

Be careful. I worked for 3 weeks in Guyana last year and it was one of the scariest places I have visited. There is no rule of law. I am a journalist and the local embassies warned me not to come. Kidnappings of foreigners are commonplace, violence is also common. You can go for days or weeks...

trying to open a bank account, help!!!

You should be wary of bringing money into the country. I have no personal experience but have been told many times that transfers from abroad into an Argentine account are subject to a withholding tax (they grab 30%). But as I said, I am not completely certain. I do all my banking offshore and...

    Peruvian restaurants

There is a great Peruvian place oppposite Abasto shopping (I forget the street, but it is on the west side of Abasto Shopping, just a few doors from Corrientes). Cheap and great food. And another, near Congreso, is called States. It is on Virrey Cevallos, between Yrigoyan and Alsina. I go there...

Can anyone recommend a private Castellano teacher in Palermo?

I would certainly recommend my old teacher, Marina Peruani. She is on Soler near Colonel Diaz. Very good, reasonably priced (I was paying A$R30/hour may be a bit more now) and very nice. Her number is (15) 5175 9923 Cheers, Richard

The WEATHER: What the H--- happened last night?

Welcome to Buenos Aires! Every year there are 3-4-5 storms like this, they come from the south-east and cause an enormous racket. Trees knocked down, often serious hail, wind, and rain -- that floods in many of the lower parts of town. Almost as often are the authorities in Capital Federal...

    Any movie lovers out there?

I am an avid movie fan. I have actually written three scripts one of which was made into a film and I am writing another now. I am looking for people who also enjoy serious cinema (I am not talking about Titanic) and talking about it after the film. There are some great movies being made here in...

    Eye Doctor?

I went to Hospital Britanico on Marcelo T Alvear (between 9 de julio and Calloa). It cost me A$R80 I think and she was a real doctor. Then I went to Pfortners for my lenses and they checked my eyes again. Pfortner's is expensive, but they are thorough.

    Airport fees

It is now included in the ticket. Nearly every western country has a similar tax, it is generally included in the ticket price, but you are paying it. In Europe it can approach EUROS 50 in some counties.

    Subte Robbery Alert (C Line)

It's a waste of time going to the police, they do nothing. I have been robbed four times (once in my apartment, hree times in the street: pickpocket, once with a knife, and once my bag was stolen in a nice cafe in recoleta). When my apartment was broken into, it was pretty obvious the portero...

Visa - Certificate of criminal records

In my experience, the Met would not give me the certificate. I had to approach the local constablulary in Camden. And I had to provide fingerprints (which the locals here in BA did for me) and I've been waiting three months and still nothing. They seemed shocked by the request at first. I also...

There was an ad in the Buenos Aires Herald today (Sunday) for an Aussie lawyer, but I know nothing about him. He says he is totally bilingual.

    Question About Cell Phone Minutes

To confirm the previous post. I have an account (in a girlfriends name) and I still get billed for 800 calls (A$R400 in three weeks). But the other calls (direct to US, Canada and other LatAm countries are dramatically less with an account, if you can get one - without a DNI it is essentially...

    Mailing Argentine steaks for Christmas?

There is also the fact that mail from Argentina is hopeless. Without exageration, at least half of all the mail I have sent from here never arrives (to Europe, Canada, Australia and the US). This includes postcards and other mail that no one would want to steal. It just never shows up. I have no...
