    For those thinking of coming

Not really a complete or accurate picture of the cost of living in Brazil because Rio de Janeiro just so happens to be one of the most expensive cities in Brazil. Sao Paulo & Rio, and much of the south, say Flori are pretty expensive. If you go further north the prices are drastically cheaper. I...

    Usama's Funeral Bash

If by not very bright you mean they choose to defend their country, put themselves in harm's way, and do the dirty, ugly work, that most people will never have to do or see, while receiving nothing but ingratitude and condescension from their fellow citizens who take for granted their freedom of...

    Usama's Funeral Bash

For all the condescending and judgmental responses regarding the Osama celebrations I just wanted to share a rebuttal to this "argument" from a good friend of mine who also happened to join the army after the 2001 attacks. Someone mentioned something about burning Korans and wearing cowboy hats...

    anyone speak braslian portuguese?

Actually they're quite different. I've studied portuguese under Brazilian teachers and under one Portuguese teacher from Coimbra. Portuguese from Portugal sounds vastly different from Brazilian Portuguese. It might as well be a different language altogether. People from Portugal have no problem...

    Delivery Tips

Interesting. I was always under the assumption delivery from Jumbo and Coto was free. Is this not the case? As someone who's been a waiter and delivery boy in a past life I always shake my head at that logic. That argument is a common one, even in the states, so no difference there. But my...

    Delivery Tips

It's no wonder some Argentines don't work hard or are on "holiday" every other week. There's no damn incentive here.

    Hey guys!

Philip, While it's not impossible to get a job here as a foreigner, especially if you speak english, it's very unlikely that person is going to earn a US salary. It happens, but unless she's got contacts, legal working papers, contacts, a bit of blind luck, and contacts, I just don't see that...

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

I have yet to see anyone telling him not to come. I do see people giving their perspective and a dose of reality....sobering or not....there's nothing wrong with that. This isn't your usual expat backpacker, this is someone who has grown accustomed to a particular lifestyle that isn't exactly...

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

I've learned something while living here. In Argentina anything's possible. Never say never.

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

Beats me. Aside from your local neighborhood parilla or steak place I have no idea where all these people are eating for US $10-12 for dinner. Lunch special sure. Aside from steak and wine I don't see the cheap prices either. A bottle of soda costs AR $9-10 and a bottle of water AR$8-9 in any...

Affordable Dolce Vita in Buenos Aires?

Recently a dozen facturas at my local panaderia went up from AR$12 to AR$16 overnight. As far as inflation goes businesses, especially small businesses feel the pinch first before passing that on to consumers. Inflation is over 20% year on end here in Argentina. Probably closer to 25% if not a...

Another "brilliant" pro business move by decree [again]

One could easily say the same about capitalism in light of the global financial crisis of 2008, no? If that isn't an example of system failure I don't know what is. While I wouldn't consider myself an advocate of the socialist system I don't see anything wrong with the socialist elements that...

    Expat cleaning person?

You should be paying them to keep up with inflation which is 20%+. So theoretically, yes, you should be giving them a 20%-25% raise each year. So that would be about 3-4 pesos a year. If you were paying 15 last year, 18-19 would be fair. 25 pesos/hour is exceptional and to hold on to good staff...

    Expat cleaning person?

Yes.....exactly what me and Perry said. 20/hour. What's the issue? I'm not saying 14 or 15 is a bad wage or makes someone immoral. What I'm saying is that just because that is the wage doesn't make it a reasonable or realistic wage to live off of. Businesses have the same logic in the US...

    Expat cleaning person?

Yes they are "en blanco" because they work for the company. I'd be willing to bet however that most expats don't pay their personal cleaning lady "en blanco" so kudos to you on that one. Me.....I don't have one for my place.....trying to save :).

    Expat cleaning person?

Not that I'm judging anyone here but just because there are Argentines are paying 15 pesos an hour doesn't make it a livable wage or okay. 25 pesos has nothing to do with being a foreigner. My boss is in charge of paying the cleaning staff and he is Argentine. At the end of the day it's about...

    Expat cleaning person?

I work for a rental agency and we pay our cleaning ladies 25 pesos an hour. That is the going rate if you want reliable, trustworthy service. We prefer not to rotate our cleaning staff so that is why we give 25. 20 is generally acceptable. Anything less than that is not good. Of course wages...
