Has anyone come across any weird Argentine laws?

the law about naming a child throws me. There is a pre-approved list of names that one can only choose from when naming a newborn. The list I believe has about 13,800 names on it so it is extensive, but the whole idea seems bizarre to me! I think it is to prevent people naming their children...

The city has just declared a Sanitary Emergency

and the percentages of those who did die that were seriously vulnerable with pre-existing conditions or babies with weak immune systems. I think in a country with a population of nearly 41million, those percentage figures are not going to be so high. I'm seriously over it already.

    Where can I buy...

really? Coto always has soy sauce. And if all else fails... I know China Town has just about every brand you could ever think of. Are you looking for soy sauce WITH garlic? Casa China should have variations. Salsa de soja or I just double checked my own bottle which reads SALSA base de Soja...

The city has just declared a Sanitary Emergency

Last night I saw the someone wearing one on the train for the first time. Not a whole lot considering a 'Sanitary Emergency'. My home city of Melbourne was dubbed 'swine flu capital of the world' for the rate that the virus spread. Still don't know anyone who has it or has had it.

Jobs for people staying 2 plus years

Of course I could make more money at home, I don't deny that. But I met my partner here and stayed. He doesn't speak any English (he is now going to classes to learn) so he doesn't have much opportunity of earning anything in Oz. We're happy here for now. My point was that I am not damaging my...

Jobs for people staying 2 plus years

I'm also working an Argentine job and earning pesos. 9 - 6 monday to friday, I don't think that is too excessive. I'll admit i'm fairly tired come Friday, but i'm far from working like a slave. I actually anticipate that it will greatly help my resume. I got this job as I had sales experience...

Is an annual visa worth the effort?

It doesn't sound like you need to arrange a CUIL or temporary residency. You should not have any problems leaving and entering the country over an 18month period. If there are times you will not leave Argentina for more than 90 days you can pay to extend the tourist visa. Otherwise take a ferry...

    I need Marmite

ooooooh wow. I just read that. I'm not sure if they still exist but many years ago Kraft had cheese sticks with vegemite through them on the shelves. Cheeseymites I think they were called. I get those soft tubes sent to me from home. I met a friend from home in the US last year for holidays...

Your Favorite Local Places for Sightseeing?

Mataderos is a barrio in La Matanza just outside of CF. It is pretty much on the provincia side of Liniers. The fair on a sunday is great, I love it! Here is the website http://www.feriademataderos.com.ar/

Your Favorite Local Places for Sightseeing?

I love La Feria de Mataderos on a Sunday. More folkloric than the antique/tango style San Telmo markets. Lots of folklore music and dance and yummy pastalitos! You'll have to take a bus out there. I can't remember what bus number but pretty sure you could find one on Rivadavia.

    indian and asian curry pastes

There is a shop on Corrientes in between Montevideo and Rodriguez Pena called El Gato that has a whole wall of herbs and spices. I did see various curry powders if you're interested in making your own paste. From memory they were more Indian that Eastern Asian. I'm not sure if this place is a...

Ramos Mejia - 7 floor building, 2-3 apartments per floor. Our place is 1bd, 1bth room + lounge/kitchen and patio. There is a garage but we don't pay a % for it as we don't have a car or access to it. We have one security guard 6 nights a week only. Expensas are $250 a month. The administration...

Do fears of crime in Argentina reflect reality?

it seems to me that crime is still very apparent in those '3 or 4 neighbourhoods that the expats do live in'. Coming from what i've seen on the much hyped media outlets (which is next to nothing as I don't have a tv and only see it from 7-8.30pm whilst at the gym) robbery and assult happens in...

Weird One - High Quality Coat Hangers?

ha! you crack me up! I know good coat hangers are stupid expensive in oz. I have those cheap wooden types, even with the clips to hold skirts etc. They work fine in my house and I have about 3 skirts on each one. However if it's a store that you have back home perhaps not good enough. You gotta...

    Tax Free Shopping

my mum did it on her way back to australia in march and it took about 2mins to get the paper work stamped and about 5mins to get the money put back on the card. This may have been because there was nobody in the queues. But the actual process doesn't require much time, so even a long queue...

    recommendations for outside BsAs

I took my mum to San Antonio de Areco when she was here in March. It was about 2 hours on a bus from my western barrio of Ramos Mejia, but I know that the bus does start from Retiro in CF. Its a quiet town on a river and there's probably not a whole heap to do if you're on your own, but there...

Health Insurance - Are the Higher End Plans Worth It?

I also have OSDE 210 which is supplied by my work. I know of a colleague who has opted to pay the extra to have a higher plan but that is due to coverage for eye specialists and such as he wears glasses and has poor eyesight. I have used the medical clinics for regular types of checkups and when...
