Down, down, down (a peso devaluation thread)

I know this, which is why I decided to turn down money to come here now rather than uproot my entire life to do so when I'm 30. The thing that bothers me is how everyone is so sure we're going to hate our lives in 6 months. We're here for different reasons, with different expectations. Just...

Down, down, down (a peso devaluation thread)

Eventually I will want to make more than I do, but it won't be in 6 months. And when that time happens I'll do something about it, but it won't change the fact that the time I have then spent here is invaluable for dozens of reasons besides money. And that is the point of noarmadillos and me...

Down, down, down (a peso devaluation thread)

I am doing EXACTLY the same thing you are doing and extremely happy to be here now. I know I've only been here two weeks so far (cue Barney saying I won't last 6 months either), but had a good job lined up before I came here with very concrete goals of working for an interesting company, living...

Using a Cell Phone From Home

EDIT: I think because my phone like most verizon phones uses CDMA technology, it won't work here (and I don't think it has a sim card, only a memory card). Can anyone confirm this? Hey, I am trying to get my phone set up here. I'd like to use my samsung phone from home. My service provider...

BA Cheapest Major City in Latin America

New job is great. Love the international atmosphere of the company, just finishing preliminary training. I think my time here is going to be very valuable for many different reasons, and I love this city already (and have yet to explore most of it)

BA Cheapest Major City in Latin America

After preliminary research, the GDP per capita adjusted for PPP says the following Argentina: 15,854 Chile: 15,002 Venezuela: 11,829 Brazil: 11,239 Colombia: 9,566 This of course is for the entire country so major cities could be different, and even then it wouldn't tell the whole story, but...

BA Cheapest Major City in Latin America

In reality it's just my completely uneducated and speculative opinion that these countries are less developed, so I very well could be wrong.

BA Cheapest Major City in Latin America

Are salaries that much lower than what a person would make in Sao Paolo, Santiago, Bogota or Caracas on a local scale? Maybe Santiago, but I find it hard to believe the local salaries are higher in Brazil, Colombia or Venezuela.

Coming Soon To A Dinner Table Near You! ALL the food you crave from home!

If he takes individualized orders like that, he has to pay retail because you can't buy in bulk. He must have a way to get them in the country without paying outrageous tariffs, and he'll have to have enough volume to offset the costs of tarriffs and shipping plus profit. Definitely skeptical...

Best resource for finding shared apts

Honestly, craigslist is still best. Found mine that way in a few days.

Moving to BA next year- need some practical tips!

Thanks!. I really appreciate all of the great advice and support on this site. Once I get settled I'll definitely look into these expat meetups you guys have. The poker night one caught my eye in particular!

Moving to BA next year- need some practical tips!

I'm taking an entry level position at a firm that does this. You all have to start somewhere. I'd rather not talk at length about my personal life on this forum other than that. And I arrived in Buenos Aires tonight.

Moving to BA next year- need some practical tips!

I am leaving for Buenos Aires in 2 days to take a job in business consulting specializing in market intelligence. Myself and a few other Americans who recently graduated from good schools in the US are going. If you are interested PM me and maybe I can send your resume to my employer. I am also...

Anyone regret moving to b a

I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I was responding to something already posted by someone on a middle class lifestyle that I thought was very incorrect and a deterrent for anyone thinking about going to BA. The negativity about finances is starting to get to me and I just want to get down...

Anyone regret moving to b a

This is completely different than everything I've been told and read in multiple threads and multiple websites. I have never heard someone say 5000 pesos is below average. Many, many argentine families live below that. I'm not talking about wealthy expats on foreign salaries. I'm going to...

Anyone regret moving to b a

I've spoken to several (young) people who are in my position working at my company on my salary. While I don't live there yet, and I understand your point completely, I still think you and many others are taking this "bare bones living" way too far. They all live fine, don't struggle to eat or...

Anyone regret moving to b a

I plan on doing that on 16,000 USD/year (shared apartment) And before you lecture me on how that isn't possible, I've done my research for months, and it is. That salary is a far cry for a middle class foreign currency income in many countries. People are way too negative on here.

    Who is still coming over?

I asked specifically about my salary and she said it would be updated as the company keeps all wages for each position the same. The increase was not included in the offer because they haven't determined how much they will increase for inflation company-wide. I will double check though, although...

    Job Offer in Buenos Aires

He is British, lives with another guy (friend), and presumably shops for himself. The American woman from the company says I can live fine on 4150, but I didn't ask about specific costs.
