    Buenos Aires is Beautiful

Wow, it would never occur to me to refer to Buenos Aires as beautiful. I think it's fairly hideous, actually. I guess it's probably the least hideous city in Latin America, but that's not saying much. All in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

ARG ranks 49 in Human Development Index

Some Norwegian girl once told me that they have an expression in Norway, that translates roughly into "luxury problem" in English, to describe why some stupid Norwegians choose to live out on the streets and get addicted to heroine (she seemed to think there was a pretty large heroine problem up...

    Clothes for lanky dudes?

Haven't been to a tailor in a good long time so I don't know my exact measurements (but I may be headed to one soon if I can't find anything on any rack here in Buenos Aires that actually fits) but I think I'm right around your size (34" inseam, for sure). Most importantly, though, I need...

    Clothes for lanky dudes?

Any other tall thin dudes here who have managed to find some decent clothing in this city? Nothing formal, just simple but well-fitting (and, if it's not asking too much, decent quality) shirts and jeans? Please steer me in the right direction if you're out there. Clothing shopping in...

New Entry "Reciprocity" Fee for US, Canada, Australian Citizens...

Maybe they don't trust the airlines to fork over the taxes? Not a whole lot of trust here in Argentina. Gol is nice enough to just add the departure tax to the price of their tickets but you still have to show the sticker on your ticket to the tax guy to verify that you've paid it. And, yeah...

New Entry "Reciprocity" Fee for US, Canada, Australian Citizens...

Can we arrange a BAExpats.org fifilafiloche vs. orwellian crazy posting cage match? That's it, I'm starting the thread "Why the US is the greatest country ever!"...

New Entry "Reciprocity" Fee for US, Canada, Australian Citizens...

Hah! Yes, Steve, as unlikely as that is, what if? Wow, so dramatic. Storm clouds. Oooh.... So, folks looking for a place to hang out for a while can either apply for some kind of long-term visa here in Argentina or go someplace else (perhaps the fifilafiloche trail: "Argentina to Morocco...

New Entry "Reciprocity" Fee for US, Canada, Australian Citizens...

Hm, why? As iStar wrote early in this thread, the fees that are paid for American or Canadian tourist visas are used to cover the enormous costs of making sure that all those applying for tourist visas, globally, intend to respect the limits of those tourist visas and not to stick around...

    Hate North Americans?

While I certainly don't agree with everything that Thomas Friedman writes in this article, I do, more or less, agree with this: And this: Unfortunately, we can't play global cop (or bully, depending on your perspective) for much longer without allowing things to seriously deteriorate back...

    Hate North Americans?

Eh, if an American needs some cheap health care they can just hop over to Canada or Mexico for a few days (and pick up some nice maple syrup or hot sauce while they're there!). :)

Hah! That spam seems oddly appropriate on this thread. UPDATE: Oh, well, that didn't last long.

    Hate North Americans?

Hah! That's funny stuff. I'd never heard of Godwin's Law before. I also like "Reductio ad Hitlerum." Anyway, yeah, thread over.

    Hate North Americans?

Oooh, I like that. Frankly, I'm still blown away by how dynamic and creative the US is and I think I always will be. While we currently do have some warmongers, religious fundamentalists and greedy dirtbags gumming up the works a bit, our fantastic universities continue to toss out smart...

    Hate North Americans?

Hah! Hey, folks, there are some terribly ignorant people down here that don't know the first thing about the US but are always just looking for someone to blame for, well, everything. It's best to ignore them.

    Banking in BA

Really? I have an HSBC Direct debit card from the US and I get charged the 11 peso fee at HSBC banks here. I wonder if it's because I have HSBC Direct (internet-only banking). Or maybe it's because your account is in Europe? Hm...
