Where can I buy a towel?

This board is not known for consisting solely of nice people. There are, unfortunately, plenty of grumpy gits. For what it's worth, I wouldn't have known where to buy a towel in BA either, and I spent nearly a month there. Kudos for asking the question, it helped me too, and carry on!

Pluna airlines is closing - tomorrow

What? That's terrible. I had a great flight with them from AEP to MVD when I was in BA in November 2011. They seemed lean, healthy and in shape, at least from a cosmetic perspective.

Jennifer Lopez and manager robbed in BA

Argentina proves again and again that it is the world headquarters of the Thieves' Guild.

Richard Stallman, founder of the FSF, robbed in Argentina

This is sure to add to Argentina's prestige among tech/open-source nerds: http://www.devthought.com/2012/06/09/richard-stallman-robbed-in-argentina/

Beware about tax-free refunds at EZE

Small merchants will take your dollars, but I don't think larger, corporate stores, where these things are centrally managed and dictated, will.

I am in the actual Armenia (Yerevan) at the moment, otherwise I wouldn't miss it for the world! :-)

Street crime as a cultural issue

Some of it is definitely a matter of policy instrumentation too, though. Sakashvili is renowned for having completely renovated the Georgian police force and taken an extremely tough stance on common crime, resulting in a very, very safe Tbilisi that is widely lauded. Of course, I have only...

Street crime as a cultural issue

I've been traveling a bit lately, and I'm currently spending some time in my not-so-distantly-ancestral home of Yerevan, Armenia. I was thinking about all the street crime-related discussions we have here. I think you guys are right in some ways. The more I travel, the more I am inclined to...

How many of you want to leave Bs As?

Well, I still intend to come down and not deterred by any of what you say.

    Is BsAs over rated?

Um, hm, no, I wouldn't say that. I've been to a lot of world capitals, and honestly, compared to BsAs, they feel like funeral home parlours. I would say BsAs's reputation as party central is well-deserved. It wasn't the primary purpose of my visit, but I got a taste anyway. It is pretty...

    Is BsAs over rated?

San Telmo is definitely not dead. You just have to know where to look. I stayed there during my visit and, from a partying perspective, would not rather have stayed anywhere else. Recoleta was fun to visit, Palermo was pointlessly overpriced and plastic, but San Telmo had cowbell and character.

Getting Dollars For Rent - Xoom or WesternU?

No, you don't, and there is nothing anyone can do to force you to get dollars, especially when it is virtually impossible.

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

I got to talking with a crew of manual labourers one day. Not sure exactly what they did, but it seemed like it was related to plumbing or duct work. Well, okay, to be fair, they were probably not native porteños, but Paraguayans or Bolivians, but yes. Unless more than half a dozen people...

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

Not every maid makes $20/hr, and there are plenty of professions that are even worse-remunerated. Remember, also, that while you may be able to afford to pay your maid $20/hr, many Argentines cannot, but still hire maids. As to how anyone could possibly survive that way, your surprise is...

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

But then again, I know lots of New Yorkers and Londoners, too. Knowing what they get paid--average professional salaries that in most other markets in their countries would be considered neither high nor low, but affording a comfortable middle class standard of living--I cannot see how they can...

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

I was speaking strictly and exclusively about the affordability of Buenos Aires for those earning foreign income denominated in foreign currencies. I agree that the local wages are unconscienably miserable and don't see how most locals afford to live in CapFed at all.

    Hear, hear!

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

Either all of you are making very exotic purchasing decisions, or something has changed radically in the last six months. I visited in November 2011 from Atlanta, which is by no means an expensive city by US standards (and has experienced considerable asset deflation as a result of the overall...

    Customer Service in Buenos Aires

Tangential rant not aimed at the OP or this thread per se: I found the Argentine approach to "customer service" more realistic and human than the American. While it certainly left some things to be desired at times, it was more relatable. After twenty years in the US, it was a breath of fresh...
