    Getting US dollars Today

Curious, is that true of Uruguayan ATMs that offer a choice of UYU or USD too?

    Getting US dollars Today

That's a very good point. It's not like the landlady has any leverage. What's she going to do, find another tenant who somehow has the magic dollar touch? My guess is that YanquiGallego is personally sympathetic to her plaintive exhortations. :-)

    Getting US dollars Today

Is it not possible to disabuse her of this factually incorrect notion? As I'm sure many people here will jump to tell you, there are no ATMs that will dispense dollars. There is no practical way to get dollars anymore except through the official AFIP route, which is far more headache than...

    Getting US dollars Today

This isn't helpful with regard to your difficulty, but I'm curious, as I intend to do a short term rental: what if you refuse to pay in USD? What if you just don't have any, or any practically viable means of getting them? Surely she can't evict you for refusing to pay in a foreign currency...

    Laptop for sale

290 GB HD? That's a rather odd size for a drive. :-) I'm guessing you're giving this total based on the amount of total available space displayed by Windows, which is going to be a subset of the drive's physical capacity, dictated by its geometry.

Could we be part of world history

Some people have rich imaginations and vibrant fantasies, fueled by a mixture of Civics for Peasants Cold War education and the infantile thumb-sucking that passes for political discourse in TV/movies.

Is Argentina on the verge of another crisis?

All very good advice. I won't be earning income down there, so the inflation-protected contract is a non-issue. I agree that life would be a lot harder trying to make it on local wage terms.

Is Argentina on the verge of another crisis?

Good post, but I'm still coming.

Prohibition on drawing from accounts in pesos from outside Argentina from April 3rd

If you're using your bank debit card, it does indeed look that way, unless the online merchant accepts foreign currencies. I don't know how that would be indicated. If some sort of reform of this nature were undertaken in the US, I would assume it's a hand-out to credit card companies. But...

    The official currency

No, the prices are all in Argentine pesos (ARS), though the symbol '$' is also used. They definitely would not be in US Dollars, especially now.

Yes, we have no bananas...and other former imports too

All that the article complains about is indeed a problem, but this is a bad piece of hit job journalism. Definitely one of the least even-handed articles I've read.

From BA, USA & Europe assumes you are a criminal

I think VPN/proxy tunneling out of a NAT gateway in Europe, the UK or North America would be your best bet.

I would agree with all that, based on my understanding.

How to exchange pesos into USD?

I don't think this route is going to work out for you. You'll just have to pay in pesos.

Yeah, I get it. A lot of you are eager to taunt us, "nah na-na-na nah, I qualify for some officially sanctioned residency status so I didn't have to slum it like you permatourists!" That's nice. Good for you. I'm not looking for advice on just how much more awesome you are.

$$$ Stuck between a rock and an Argentine place...

I've been trying to figure out how to pay an Argentine developer in USD, and we explored the Xoom option. They do not do USD any longer. There is no practical way to get USD into the country electronically and disbursed as such.

I'm happy to pay all necessary fines, I just don't want to be turned back at the border, denied reentry, or something of that ilk.

85, 88, same difference. :-) The point is that once you have stayed 90 days, you have to get an extension for another 90 days, for a maximum of 6 months out of the year. So, regardless of when exactly you left, if you're hoping for another 90 day stamp, you're counting on skirting around the...

    Permatourism and EZE

Question: The reason the "Colonia visa run" approach to visa renewal works is because Argentine preclearance officials there (so far) look the other way on "renewing" visa stamps, i.e. giving you another stamp after your allowed 90 days and without the necessary Migraciones extension. What...

    Taking medicine to the States?

My family brings medicine from Russia all the time because their bodies can't handle most American over-the-counter medicines -- too rough. It it is never problem.
