    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

The 1/4 Pounder w/ Cheese value meal is $38 pesos in Argentina (8.5 USD). I believe that's a good 50% higher than the U.S. price. Regardless, I still find BA cheaper than most U.S. cities overall. Granted, I rarely eat McDonalds and haven't had to purchase much clothes or electronics. My...

Subte linea D / Monthly expenses

Yes, $1000usd (not including rent) is plenty based on my experience the last couple months. You can eat out several times a week on that budget and can definitely pay for an occasional cab. If you prefer mixed drinks and going to clubs frequently, you may find your expenses to be higher.

What's your Favorite (and Positive) "Only in Argentina" story?

James P - It's also strange that the dogs don't look anything like the "smart dogs" you see sniffing out bombs or drugs on Animal Planet. Perhaps even leaving behind piles of poop on the sidewalk is part of their strategy. As soon as the Argentine government discovers they have the smartest...

What's your Favorite (and Positive) "Only in Argentina" story?

I was walking home from class the other day and a stray dog passed me. The dog passed by another stray dog going the opposite direction with neither taking the time to growl, sniff butts or even glance at each other. I followed the dog and watched him easily cross multiple streets just as a...

Coming to ba in 3 months. Just some quick questions...

I agree with Fireman123's estimate of $1000 per month excluding rent and Spanish lessons. This would also be enough to eat out at restaurants a few times a week with drinks afterwards. I think even without Spanish lessons you will probably need a minimum of 8k plus money for the ticket. Also...

    local fishes

I've tried a couple local fish. Pez de Angel was a very tasty mild fish which was perfect for pan frying with salt, pepper, EVOO, lemon juice. I bought another delicious mild white fish from the pescadoria last night. Unfortunately, my method of ordering is to say "uno de esto" which was...

    Radical change in rental law

A minimum of three years sounds outrageous even if this wasn't an economy that had benefited greatly from temporary rentals. If this is true (my Spanish is too poor to understand the details in the article) there may finally be a protest I can participate in!

    A few questions

Based on your response, I'd say absolutely give it a shot. I wouldn't say being conversational in Spanish upon arrival is a must but it would certainly make the first few weeks easier. I took Spanish in high school and college but learned far more in 6 weeks here with tutoring and immersion...

    A few questions

You'll get a range of answers for #1 since your biggest expense will be rent which varies greatly depending on what barrio you live in and how much space you have. I'm currently paying $900 USD a month for a furnished studio in Palermo Soho. My monthly expenses are about 2k but I could...

    NCAA Tournament?

Last Saturday Casa Bar was showing the 2nd round games on two TVs. I went to Sugar in Palermo Soho last night and they were playing the UNC-Ohio game but switched to an ESPN documentary instead of showing the Kentucky game. Both these places play the games without sound. Haven't tried Alamo yet.
