Hi all

I will be coming to Buenos Aires from Australia for 6-12 months late 2011 to learn Spanish and have a few things I would like advice on.

1. Can I rent a good furnished studio apartment in a central area for around US$1200 per month?
2. Any recommendations for a good language school.
3. Is the city a safe place for someone on their own?
4. How hard would it be for me to connect with others for social activities etc (I am a 58 year old male)

Spent some time in Buenos Aires a little over a year ago and absolutely loved the city.

Hope that some of you can give me some helpful advice.

Thanks
Michael

1.) With ease. I've never heard a bad thing about http://www.bytargentina.com and found them to be professional in my dealings with them.

2.) Can't help you there as I've never been interested in that, but others will help you out, I'm sure.

3.) Lots on this in the forum already. Use the search button to dig up lots. In short, it's a big city with normal big city problems but if one takes the normal precautions one should be OK for the most part. I'd advise you to read up on the 'bird poop' scam as well as pickpocketing, however. Safe vs bad areas is important too & you can read up tons on that, but in short, the expat bubble of Palermo will be fine.

4.) Pretty easy with this forum.

Re: #2..

It's not a language school, but someone like yourself may be interested in intercambios/'language exchange' social events.

Here's one for example (although there are more):

I guess this covers #4 in part too..

I would highly recommend the school verbum. I studied there in December, and really liked it. Their website is verbum.biz or you can pm me for more info about my experiences.

I did a month intensive at the language branch of UBA the government run university. It was great, good value, good teaching, met loads of people & better for integrating with locals than a private school aimed at foreigners.
