For the last 2 months I have been trying to get a marriage license in BsAs. Strangely the local bureaucrats were obsessed with having me prove that I was divorced. They were not concerned that I might have 10 wives at this time or that I might be a criminal. But only endless variations on verifying my divorce, from many years ago.
I have shipped documents back and forth between New Jersey and Washington, D.C., prepared endless requests and ordered many certifications, apostilles, translations of documents, visited govt offices, made phone calls, paid fee.
Finally last week the in La Plata clerk smiled at us and congratulated us on having proved my divorce to their satisfaction. My papers were submitted and we waited for final approval,
Today we learned that I now would be required to prove that I was married. All the documents that proved my divorce were not sufficient to prove that I was married. Duh????
I made a few calls to New York City and learned that their procedures are an impossible maze of requirements starting with my not remembering which county issued the license and my not being able to appear in person.
At this point we're stumped.
Any suggestions?
