For the last 2 months I have been trying to get a marriage license in BsAs. Strangely the local bureaucrats were obsessed with having me prove that I was divorced. They were not concerned that I might have 10 wives at this time or that I might be a criminal. But only endless variations on verifying my divorce, from many years ago.

I have shipped documents back and forth between New Jersey and Washington, D.C., prepared endless requests and ordered many certifications, apostilles, translations of documents, visited govt offices, made phone calls, paid fee.

Finally last week the in La Plata clerk smiled at us and congratulated us on having proved my divorce to their satisfaction. My papers were submitted and we waited for final approval,

Today we learned that I now would be required to prove that I was married. All the documents that proved my divorce were not sufficient to prove that I was married. Duh????

I made a few calls to New York City and learned that their procedures are an impossible maze of requirements starting with my not remembering which county issued the license and my not being able to appear in person.

At this point we're stumped.

Any suggestions?

Try Uruguay?

Try Uruguay?
During the last 2 months, I checked all the nearby countries in Latin American, they had the same requirements for proving my divorce so I assume they likely will also have additional crazy requirements like proving my marriage.
We had reasons to want to have a wedding in Argentina but now it seems to be impossible.

When I got married in 1981, in Olavarría, the Registro Civil officials appeared to be concerned whether or not they could legally marry a non-resident foreigner - the situation had never come up before - but they uttered not a word about my estado civil at that time.

Jeff, if you really desire an Argentine marriage license I suggest you go the Plan B route. Definately more expensive but almost certainly more effective...hire a well connected (would it be civil? Or "Almost Family" attorney?) to use their connection-expertise to unblock the process. I think they're usually good at that. By the way kudos to you for your stamina and perseverance!

By the time you clear the paperwork you will be common law married.
Plan -B fly to Miami and do it. Bring the papers back with an Appostile. Get em translated. Done.
