....On October 24, the three sections of the radio spectrum will be awarded among the companies that submitted offers. The funds obtained will go to the Treasury. The announcement occurred amid the turbulence that led the blue dollar to exceed $1,000.

The national gov't announced that on October 24, two days after the presidential elections, it will carry out the auction....of three lots of radio spectrum for the
development and provision of the 5G mobile network service....The bidding process involves three lots of 100 MHz each - between 3,300 and 3,600 MHz of the ARG radio spectrum - that will be allocated to the land mobile services with primary category. Claro, Telecom and Telefónica presented proposals and provided guarantees. They are the three companies, with strong investments in the country, which transcend the electoral situation....

I'll just mention that the frequency band concerned, n78 in 5G terminology, is the same heavily-used C-band spectrum for satellite services (TV and others), and local "Wireless To The Home" (WTTH) internet services already used in locations difficult to reach by other means. It's not the Millimeter Wave (mmW, n258) band at 26GHz that's being trialed.

Each of the operators, as Gracielle explains, expects to get 100MHz, which will provide a significant improvement in performance for phones that support it. You can check if your phone supports n78. I saw up to 1Gbps in testing near the Enacom office, though in normal use you won't see this much. This will be "real" 5G, with no spectrum sharing with 4G as has generally been the case until now in Argentina. As with 5G DSS, the first deployments are likely to be with Telecom Personal, in NSA and SA modes, starting with a limited rollout in 2024.

The spectrum auction was today, details here:

Telecom Personal are already activating the new spectrum at the sites they previously installed (all the operators, plus 3 regional ones, already had 2x25MHz allocations in the band for WTTH applications). For example there's one n78 site at Aeroparque, also covering the road outside, that's now operational with 100MHz bandwidth.

Bad news. Significant improvement for what? When are they going to admit that 5G is unsafe?
I was careful to point out in my post that this new 5G spectrum has been previously available and used for many years now by other services, including WTTH, and the adjacent bands have been used for satellite communications and television, as well as aviation, often at much higher power levels than the 5G services now permitted there. So if 5G is unsafe, all the other services were much more so, and our goose is long since cooked ;)

5G isn't revolutionary, it's an evolution of 4G focusing on more flexible frequency and more efficient power management, slightly higher speeds (just 10% more than 4G in a direct comparison), and especially lower latency (not just for gamers).
WooHoo! Improved coverage and hopefully less dropped calls. Good to see.
Probably not so much. It's more about higher speeds.
