Today Argentina successfully launched it's first communications satellite from a launch base in French Guiana. President CFK praised all involved.

Story and video here: http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/172315/argentina-launches-first-satellite-

On a related note Holdout Fund (aka "Vultures") guru Paul Singer announced a simultaneous launch of it's own private satellite from it's base in lower Manhattan to, surprisingly, the same geosynchronous orbit at the Argentine satellite. Mr. Singer declined to comment on the mission or nature of his satellite.

WOWW look out NASA now there's a new sheriff in ... space

The rocket in the picture is an Ariane 5, the largest of all the Ariane launchers. It must be a big ass satellite.

Needs to be big to transmit all the Futbal para Todos and TV appearances by CFK.

This is not the first AR sat. There are others. 1. Spying on farmers planting schemes. 2.Spying on the media. 3. Surveying swimming pool sizes and BMW parking habits. 4. First Contact with Cristina look alike candidates from outer space.

Few people know this, but the deadliest space accident of all time happened in Brazil 11 years ago. As the indigenous satellite rocket launcher (VLS) was being prepared for launch, it accidentally ignited and exploded, killing 21 scientists and technicians that were working on it and completely destroying the launch facility. The Brazilian space program has never recovered from that incident.
The VLS started as a nuclear missile program, in response to Argentina's Condor II. The goal was to build a platform that could be launched from northern Brazil and accurately deliver a nuclear warhead anywhere in Argentina. As the the relations between the two countries improved and Brazil signed the non-proliferation treaty, the VLS was re-purposed as a satellite launcher.

DIRECTV Latin American also had a new satellite on that flight.... looks like some new HD channels should be coming to their lineup!
