Argentina's financial crash is the first big defeat for Trump's global Maga movement

I wonder why anyone would refer to "Trump's MAGA movement" as "global" in scope with the exception that Trump, as the POTUS, has been willing to use his power to "leverage" other countries of the globe to comply with whatever he wants them to do that will make America great again, and not necessarily serve the interests of the other countries. The primary goal MAGA is not to make any other countries great.

Milei's MAGA is Make America Great Again. His policies only benefit the US farmers.

I'm sure that I have previously never quoted Politico, but when I searched beyond YouTube for additional information, this was the top result.

Trump-pledged support for Argentina stirs anger among Republicans - POLITICO https://share.google/UdaXdZkloQ0eZMIOE

"President Donald Trump’s potential $20 billion financial backstop for his ally, Argentina’s leader Javier Milei, is running into growing opposition from Democrats, Republicans and farm groups over concerns the deal would hurt farmers and use U.S. taxpayer resources to backstop a flailing foreign economy at U.S. taxpayers’ expense.

Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier this week pledged a major economic rescue package for Argentina. Bessent, who has been touting the plans on social media and TV appearances in recent days, says the deal is needed to stabilize the nation’s financial turmoil ahead of October midterm elections that are critical to Milei retaining power and continuing reforms that supporters say will turn around the country’s floundering economy.

But the economic lifeline to a foreign country — one which has struggled for decades to pay its international creditors and rein in government spending — also carries some political and financial risks for the White House. Democrats have already seized on the opening to criticize a foreign bailout at U.S. taxpayer expense.

And powerful agriculture groups and their Republican allies in Congress are also sounding alarms about the deal.

“Why would USA help bail out Argentina while they take American soybean producers’ biggest market??? We shld use leverage at every turn to help hurting farm economy Family farmers shld be top of mind in negotiations by representatives of USA,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said on X Thursday.

Grassley said farmers were “very upset” about Argentina “selling soybeans to China right after USA bail out.”

The American Soybean Association said Argentina, a major agricultural producer, sold 20 shiploads of soybeans to China around the same time Bessent announced the U.S. was exploring a financial package. The transaction was eased by Buenos Aires waiving taxes on its soybean exports. China has turned to other major soybean exporters, such as Argentina and Brazil amid a trade war with the U.S.

The White House directed POLITICO to Trump’s comments in the Oval Office on Thursday, where he said he’d use some of the windfall from tariffs to support U.S. farmers. The White House added that the administration believes an Argentine economic collapse would hurt U.S. farmers more by lowering the price of Argentine agricultural commodities. Treasury did not comment."

I wonder if its really worth billions of US dollars which would be provided by the USA to delay the inevitable, an "Argentine economic collapse" (which means the collapse of the Peso) long enough for Milei's party to retain power in late October's election. If they suffer a significant defeat, leading to the conclusion that Milei will lose the general election in 2028, will the US continue to support the Peso until then, gradually or rapidly buying 20 billion dollars worth of Argentine bonds, pro riding funds for the present government to support the Peso?

If the recent "collapse" of the Peso was the result of the collapse of the Argentine bond market, its worth asking why that happened, even though those bonds would have paid a high interest rare?

Is the answer as simple as the fact that few investors have confidence that they will be repaid?

Yeah no... MAGA is, unfortunately, a global movement.

When you have Orban and Fico, leaders of EU countries, being invited to and speaking at CPAC in support for MAGA and Eurosceptic parties in the EU, MAGA groups courting far right MEPs in EU, Trump openly supporting and defending Bolsonaro, Musk openly advocating for Reform UK in the UK, USA threatening EU institutions to drop "DEI" and "woke" research then it is really not hard to believe that MAGA is not global.

Don't want to defend Milei, but Evans-Pritchard seems to be clueless about the economic history of Argentina. And Milei's MAGA (Make Argentina Great Again) is destined to come a cropper just as Trump's MAGA will (indeed, is). Slogans cannot contend with underlying reality. US support for Argentina is not altruistic: it is there to bolster the use of the dollar. Argentina is just one of the many holes in the dike that Team Bessent is seeking to plug. The peso is on the ropes but so is the dollar. The underlying problems are deep-seated and structural.

It is colonialism. How do you explain that Trump and Milei do the opposite? Milei open the markets while Trump close them.
