About the smell. Smell is in the nose of the noseholder 
I love this stuff. I use it in a ratio of about 1/4 teaspoon (powder) to 1 cup of dry lentils (plus some curry, cumin, and salt). Add 2 cups of water and cook for about 15 minutes at medium. Serve with rice.
