Austerity economics manifests as a mental health crisis

We don’t believe this surge is due to a shift in psychopathology or purely psychic causes,” she added. Instead, mental health authorities from 16 of Argentina’s 23 provinces, including Buenos Aires, which together account for more than half of the country’s population, have written a report putting the blame squarely on Milei’s government.

That is the core of the article: to blame everything that goes wrong on Milei.

I can surely believe that the mental health of Argentines has deteriorated recently, but why do people need to exploit this politically?

I hear you. I have relatives in Venezuela and if I had to live their daily experience I would be an absolute fcuking nutcase by now.

Yes, literally sickening as well as morally repugnant.
So there is no blame on the past governments that delivered the current situation and country reputation? instead trying to put the blame squarely on the government trying to get out of the mess.

It's also interesting given the win and votes they received in the election to think the entire country is blaming Milei. I would think it's the contrary.

Exactly. Isn't there a mental health crisis in the UK at the moment too with a government/ state who for a long time is is doing anything but austerity, regardless of their colour? Perhaps there is just no escaping modern times.

Argentina has long since been home to one of the highest densities of phycologists per capita anywhere in the world as its population have long since struggled with mental health issues, perhaps even more openly than in many western countries where seeking help/ therapy isn't such a "common" thing to do.

Absolutely.

I'm fairly certain since the pandemic there has been a greater awareness of the mental health issues facing society globally.

Americans, Canadians etc are also suffering. Mental health issues are on the rise from pandemic to the cost of living crisis globally. They are starting austerity measures globally.

To suggest that this is isolated to Argentina or a result of Milei when he's taking the measures to try and prevent this cycle from going on again and again shows it's just a political hit piece, not actual journalism.

As a society they continually voted short term benefits at the cost of an unsustainable model.
