Well, if you don't have an income, you will have a hard time here. Are you sick of NY? Take a trip here and live here for a short time, since you are from NY you will see the differences immediately. I have a BFA from Parsons, and it's quite useless here, but... you have to be very creative in how you network, you have to know people, start doing everything at home (NY), I do recommend reading this forum, I wish I did before moving here, because you will get some idea of the daily frustrations many expats deal with living in BA. For example, earning money is one struggle. I am here, writing to you because a student just cancelled on me, and I am so glad I don't depend on this (teaching English) as my income, because I would be in trouble. I like NY better than BA, of course, but NY is also not a cheap place to live anymore, Patti Smith said in an interview once, that NY is not a city for artist anymore, and that artists need to look for a new city, a new place to create, I couldn't agree with her more. We chose here because my husband was offered a teaching job. First, he is from Argentina, second, he knows people, third he has masters degree from NYU, graduated from UBA with two degrees, he speaks Spanish and English fluently, speaks some Hebrew, now get this, with all of these qualifications, he is getting paid a quarter of what he got paid in NY;pesos sucks, but if you work for an American company, as you will read in this forum, you will be fine. So it depends on you, and what you want. It's tough over here, do learn Spanish, learn as much as you can, listen to music, memorize lyrics, repeat them, read aloud, talk to as many people you can in NY in Spanish, and start now. You will learn Spanish while you are here anyway but life will be better for you if you have some foundation of Spanish.
Last, if you have a special diet, there is nothing too special here, in terms of food. There is no Whole foods here, the health food shops are old, and the only one that has modern things is super expensive. There are no special vegetables here, like you have in the Farmers Market in NY. And you will miss the how things work in NY, you will miss many things, maybe by living here, you will learn to love NY again, I know I have. If you are a romantic and you take risk, why not try a place with nature and trees? It's so polluted here, NY (accept for midtown, and Union Square )feels so much cleaner for some reason.
