Hey All,

I am moving to Buenos Aires in Decemeber from New York. I have saved some money, but would like to find work to help support my time abroad. I have read that teaching jobs are scarce around this time. I would be willing to do something else, except for call centers. I am fairly unexperienced with speaking spanish, am not tefl certified, but I have a bachelor of arts in communications. After college I have worked in journalism and have bar tended. Any feedback would be great. I am still taking the trip but will have to leave as soon as I begin to run low on cash. I'd like to stay though.

If you're experienced in journalism, your best bet would be to find a job freelance writing. You might be able to find a job bartending, but both of these jobs (unless you luck out with a really good gig!) will keep you running to make ends meet. You didn't really say what other qualifications you have, but know that without speaking Spanish at least moderately well you'll have a tough time finding employment here. Best of luck!

Well, if you don't have an income, you will have a hard time here. Are you sick of NY? Take a trip here and live here for a short time, since you are from NY you will see the differences immediately. I have a BFA from Parsons, and it's quite useless here, but... you have to be very creative in how you network, you have to know people, start doing everything at home (NY), I do recommend reading this forum, I wish I did before moving here, because you will get some idea of the daily frustrations many expats deal with living in BA. For example, earning money is one struggle. I am here, writing to you because a student just cancelled on me, and I am so glad I don't depend on this (teaching English) as my income, because I would be in trouble. I like NY better than BA, of course, but NY is also not a cheap place to live anymore, Patti Smith said in an interview once, that NY is not a city for artist anymore, and that artists need to look for a new city, a new place to create, I couldn't agree with her more. We chose here because my husband was offered a teaching job. First, he is from Argentina, second, he knows people, third he has masters degree from NYU, graduated from UBA with two degrees, he speaks Spanish and English fluently, speaks some Hebrew, now get this, with all of these qualifications, he is getting paid a quarter of what he got paid in NY;pesos sucks, but if you work for an American company, as you will read in this forum, you will be fine. So it depends on you, and what you want. It's tough over here, do learn Spanish, learn as much as you can, listen to music, memorize lyrics, repeat them, read aloud, talk to as many people you can in NY in Spanish, and start now. You will learn Spanish while you are here anyway but life will be better for you if you have some foundation of Spanish.
Last, if you have a special diet, there is nothing too special here, in terms of food. There is no Whole foods here, the health food shops are old, and the only one that has modern things is super expensive. There are no special vegetables here, like you have in the Farmers Market in NY. And you will miss the how things work in NY, you will miss many things, maybe by living here, you will learn to love NY again, I know I have. If you are a romantic and you take risk, why not try a place with nature and trees? It's so polluted here, NY (accept for midtown, and Union Square )feels so much cleaner for some reason.

I stopped playing " gotcha " in elementary school. Glad to know you're keeping the spirit alive. ;)

Seriously though, Steve must have been out and about so I posted this in his honor. We all know no one does snarky like he does.

Love it.

Just my 2 cents (don't know if that's doable & that's certainly not a very innovative idea) :
Start a blog about Argentina = if it's interesting enough (approach/photos/style/spelling) maybe will you be lucky selling ads spaces ?

How about posting a few quotes where I've said anything this personal about anyone else here?

I hope I'm the snark of the century.

That would take way too much effort good sir. I'll just stick to my general assumptions.

thank you for replies. i posted days ago, not expecting to hear much. I will definitely be checking this forum out more often. I would like to get a "real degree" blackhand, but I'm too anxious to travel. I'm sure the beginning of the move will be rough since I'm an unexperienced Spanish speaker and will have to get past the Argentinean accent too. I am really looking forward to the move, however I'm sure there will be stressful moments involving income and looking for work.
