Alpargatas are a great idea! And you can get all sorts of different styles now -- Paez one of the more popular brands (for "style" -- you can buy the old standard ones anywhere).

Aside from the circus they call politics/economics here, Argentina is a wonderful country full of very hospitable people. There is a good chance you'll be back. This place has a way of getting under your skin. :)

FYI - if what you got at the flea market really is an antique you might have trouble getting it out of the country. The Minister of Culture (not sure the exact name) frowns on items like this crossing the borders.
