Yesterday I had the chance to mosey through a very large supermarket, not my "usual retailer" and I was amazed that some items costs 100 % more than in my usual super. That made me think that you probably see other things I am not aware of.

My proposition is to pool info of good deals, good brands or special offers.
things like "go to Coto Carrefour today and you get 70% off X or y."
"sighted imported .... today "

A request though and that is to keep it snappy and not to delve into the why oh why of prices otherwise the thread will become unwieldy.

I buy my Dame Mani in Barrio Chino (Asia Oriental Shopping).

The same goes for herbs like cilantro & chives... And it's about the only place I can find mint. And jalapeños & seafood there as well.

I shop around for my legumes, sometimes buying them in dieteticas, but often I buy in Barrio Chino (Casa China) as well.

Walnuts are ridiculously expensive in DISCO, so I buy mine from dieteticas. There's one on Thames b/n Av. Santa Fe & Guemes that's in the middle of the block on the left side of the street. There's also one in Colegiales on Elcano that I like for walnuts. There's are extremely fresh and they run AR$92/kilo for partidas. (That's a good price for quality walnuts, though you can find them for barely less for semi-crappy ones.)

DISCO actually has a good deal on baguettes. Both quality & price.

Carrefour often has beer specials on Saturday. Either 3 for the price of 2, or 30% rebate for a future purchase on your 2nd one. Carrefour on Saturdays seems to have a lot of promos up around the store.

JUMBO is loaded with options and it is the most expensive place to shop in town.

Wines at Chinos can be 65% of the grocery store price. You just have to look around. It varies by chino & varietal.

I buy

Coto : Liver pate in a glass jar Coto own brand Ciudad Lago
around 8 pesos .It is imported from Spain and tasty. Can be found in the cold cabinet next to the usual cold cuts.
Spanish sliced chorizo.
50 pesos a kilo.Tried and found to be very good. Cold cabinet with sliced meats.

Walmart: Campo austral Salami 86 pesos per kilo regular price. Other stores up to 156 pesos.
Great Value milk in pouch: 2.60 per litre

Jumbo: Don Atilio Gouda, artesanal cheese around 70 pesos a kilo. Can be found even cheaper in some fiambrerias. You can buy it in segments or a complete cheese around 800 grams a piece.

Over to you..

To be honest, and I know I'm going to sound like a lazy YANQUI, I don't yet ¨get¨ the concept of going to several different places for your basic supermarket goods. I understand that some places have this and that cheaper, but where do you guys find the time for all this hunting? I mean, I have heard of people going way out of their way to save a few pesos on a few things. All of my friends in the provence say that the prices are comparable to Capital generally anyways.

Unless it is something that is a specialty item, which I rarely buy because of the offensive prices, I wouldn't go out of my way to go anywhere but my usual grocer.

That said, I DID do some comparison shopping between the 3 main supermarkets in my area when i moved and go to the cheaper of the 3 exclusively.
