The tango championships began in 2002 with the Campeonato Metropolitano de Tango de Salon con Estilo and Elegancia. No professionals were allowed to enter. There were no age categories. Eighty couples competed in the finals. Three couples in each of three zones were finalists. $600 was the prize.

The program for this year's festival and competition shows how it has grown from a local event outdoors at a park to a two-week event that attracts dancers from around the world. Getting on the program is good publicity.
