Hi i'm moving back to BA after a 6 month break and would like to purchase a small engined (120cc) scooter or motorbike when i return.

Could anyone give me some rough guide prices? and maybe some good places to look

Also what is the procedure of obtaining a motorcycle license in Argentina? I have a full British Car License but suspect it wont get me far!!

Thank.

Look here :

Prices : 4000-7000 pesos for a brand new (Better to buy a new one).

Note also that it is not recommended to leave it in the street at night (might cost you 400-500 pesos of monthly parking ?) unless you have a police station nearby and you can park it in front (like many do). You can also park it in front of a kiosco opened 24/24 while leaving a good monthly tip to the guys running the shop at night (100/150 pesos).

You can use your British license but it might create you problems if you have an accident (unclear subject... But I'm using my French license since over a year now : got controlled a few times = no problem. Never had an accident here though, knock on wood).

Also, you will find the best deals for motos & scoots in Liniers, along Rivadavia more or less at 11.000 (about 10 motorcycle shops there = that's "the" moto place in BA)

In my experience searching, all imported brands, (pretty much any brand you've known before coming to Argentina) are insanely expensive. A USD$8,000 bike on the Honda US website retails for USD$16,000 here in Argentina. Ridiculous.

Fortunately, if you're looking for something under 200cc there are a few home-grown options:

www.mondial-moto.com
www.zanella.com.ar

Happy hunting!

Depends what you want to use the bike for.
125cc may be a little small for trips.
I went for a used, 1 year old Mondial HD254A, chopper style bike and paid Pesos7500.
It's basic but reliable (touch wood) and I do my own maintenance.
I'm also winging it on a UK license.....runs for woods....

I just went to Rivadavia 11000, (10800) and was surprised at how few bikes there were. I seem to remember seeing more at Puerreydon and (Corrientes?).

How odd ?! You were in the right place though (at 10.700 also with dealers such as Motoroma who sells 700 bikes a month).

On pueyrredon (closer to Cordoba or Sta Fe btw) there are indeed a few dealers also, but imho you'll find the best deals in Liniers (Rivadavia).
