I was buying some clothes at Zara today and unfortunately the bill was over 2000 pesos.

The lady giving the receipt was so damn suspicous of me, that it was hilarious. She was very perturbed that I was paying cash.

She asked my sources of funds? And then wanted my id. Of course, I gave her id from my country and not my dni, and told her I am a tourist.

But , my god, she was behaving like KGB agent!

ja ja

Is it such a big deal to spend 2000 pesos, guys? Does a shop like Zara has right to ask so many questions for a cash purchase? If not, whats the answer to such a cashier?

Comments?

I know there is some sort of requirement that large purchases in grocery stores must be made with credit cards. In the US, large cash transactions must include the consumers tax information. Maybe there is something similar here?

But, considering that I make cash payments of 5000 on a regular bases (tuition) and they don't ask for any documentation, I'm guessing that the cashier was just being nosey.

Ceviche, you can`t tell when your are being hit on?

She wanted you or your money!
Take it as a complement and tell her with a straight face you are a drug dealer.

Cashier: "Um, sir? I'll need to know the source of your funds before I can complete this transaction."

Me: "I'm a neo-liberal internet troll planted here by large corporations to create havoc and undermine the current populist government. My employer only pays in cash."

Cashier: "I see ... here is your receipt. Would you like these pants and shirts in one bag?"

There is a law where with purchases over 1000 pesos forms have to be filled with the source of funds.
This is why places like Carrefour and Jumbo split your bill if it comes in over 1000 pesos to avoid the paperwork.

Does that apply to apartment rental payments? Because I've complained numerous times to the agent who takes my cash every month for the owner of the apartment we are renting that I want to pay by bank transfer instead of needing to walk over carrying a bunch of cash and they refuse - obviously because someone doesn't want to pay their taxes.

I'd ask to speak to her supervisor, and then inform them they had just lost a big sale and a customer.

And people wonder why the economy is failing here...

Today I had to join a queue just for a guy to give me some hey fever tablets off a shelf so I could then join another queue to pay.
