I have an 8 hour layover in Caracas on my way to Spain. My original plan was to visit town for a few hours between flights. Now not so sure that is a wise decision.

Has anyone been to Caracas lately. I'm looking for current information as to my safety if I rent a car or car and driver for a few hours.

Thanks, T/

U.S. citizens traveling to Venezuela need a visa: http://caracas.usemb...-update-15.html

If you are a U.S. citizen (or can't travel on another passport), you might also check with your airline about needing a "Transit Visa." That isn't clear on that website, and for some countries -- like the U.S. -- such transit visas are necessary.

I'd give it a pass: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/12/violent-crime-makes-venezuela-dangerous

Venezuela is the only South American country where I've never traveled, but one of our best friends left the country largely because of the insecurity. The airport road is notoriously dangerous.

Thank you for the heads up. I guess I will stay in the airport. I will also try to figure out if I need a "transit visa". Thant's something I haven't heard of before.

I did some further research, and it would seem that any foreigner who requires a tourist visa to enter Venezuela would need some sort of visa to enter Venezuela.

http://tramites.emba...visa-de-turista

*Above this text appears the list of nationalities that do not need a tourist visa.

The US requires transit visas (or visa waivers) for foreign nationals (except Canadians) so Venezuela (in the name of "reciprocity") might now do so as well.

Another question....Is a transit visa necessary if we don't leave the airport? Is the airport the same as entering Venezuela?
