If you do, all of the information in your computer COULD become the "property" of the US government?

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS POSSIBLE?
 
Maybe you could tell us more. Where did you hear this? How would this happen?

Its being spread by that paragon of integrity, Glenn Beck.

And its complete baloney.

I just went to cars.gov, and checked several different pages- no form or sign in page, no government stealing everything in my computer. It works just like any other website. I didnt have to sign my life away.

But even if you did accept the privacy agreement, do you actually think the DOT has the ability to steal info from your computer, or wants it?
You overestimate the abilities of government- and certainly, this is from the same Glenn Beck who says the government cant administer health care, oversee bankruptcies, build anything, employ anyone without waste and fraud- in other words, the right wing wants you to believe the government is incompetent to do ANYTHING- and yet they are suddenly more sophisticated at computer thievery than russian spam kings?

It is to laugh. If the technology existed to pilfer your computer, offshore porn and gambling sites would be doing it right now, without politely waiting for you to click "I agree"- as if you clicking that box actually changes any functional ability of anybody, criminal or government, to steal info?
Cmon.

Glenn Beck, and the right wingnuts in general, are desperate for attention. The "birther" fantasy is playing poorly, the Tea Parties were failures, and they keep losing elections. This kind of thing is the best they can come up with....
 
Ries is correct.... It's the conspiracy theory du jour. Seems like a full moon out for CT's this week. :rolleyes::D
 
If it were true, which I doubt, or if you were worried about logging into any rogue website which would then infect your computer, why not use a sandboxed browser which protects completely from such things. Try Sandboxie for example.

The "disclaimer" Glenn Beck was referring to was on the cars.gov dealer sign in page and over the week end the White House removed it. Here it is:

"Any or all uses of this system, any or all uses of this system and all files on this system may be intercepted, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected, and disclosed to authorized CARS, DOT, and law enforcement personnel as well as all authorized officials of other agencies, both domestic and foreign. By using this system, the user consents to such interception, monitoring, recording, copying, auditing, inspecting and disclosure at the discretion of CARS or the DOT personnel."

Glenn Beck clearly does not believe the government can "run" health care. Neither do a majority American citizens.

Did you see any of the town hall meetings over the weekend?
 
I heard if you wear a tinfoil hat while you are on the site they CIA can't read your thoughts.
 
That "disclosure" basically says that while using cars.gov, the information you submit to that site may be monitored by the people owning the site.

Which is pretty obvious. A site pointing out that by using it, the site owners will know what you are using it for. Harldy grounds for concern, but I suppose its an opportunity for self promoting media whores like Beck to try and whip up a bit of outrage. Not that it takes much these days.
 
No way I am letting the government get personal information from me like my SS# or my DL# or where I live and pay taxes from.............oh....all gov. issued items.

I love the anti health care rants. Gov competition has destroyed companies like Fed ex and UPS to name an example. If private insurance company's can't handle a little competition than they don't deserve to survive. We trust the government to kill people in foreign wars but for some reason not health insurance?

I have a question: Lets say the government attains personal information from your computer that it doesn't already have....what would it do with that information? Does it just want to spy on you for the sake of spying? Steal your money?
