Hey guys,

Does anyone know how to get cash out of your US based checking account if you don't have your debit card handy? HSBC sent me a new Debit to my address in the States and turned off my current one. The new card should be here a few days but i was wondering if I can get to my cash now. I thought about using western union to wire myself the money but they need a debit card to do that, they can't do it using checking account. Go figure.

So any ideas?

Here's a sneaky little trick I learned in Peru when I lost my debit card on vacation. You can go to the casino and pay for chips with your credit card. When you cash out, they give you cash. You just have to play slots or a game for a few minutes.

You did not say if you had a credit card. I got into a similar pinch and here is what I figured out how to do...after a long stressful day walking around microcentro nearly in tears looking at tall financial buildings and wondering why I could not get to my money....

If you have a credit card, you can get a cash advance...but OJO, hey! DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU KEEP A BALANCE ON YOUR CARD; IT'S JUST DUMB! For gosh sakes, stick it out if you can. They will charge you 30% or some godly amount of interest, and OF COURSE, you cannot pay off the high interest money until last because they do everything to keep your money. Last, year, I think my card (Bank of America credit card) charged me a 10% fee or 10 dollars, whichever was higher...and then, the high interest rate, which was not applicable because I pay my card off every month and have no finance charges.

YOU CANNOT WALK INTO ANY BANK AND GET A CASH ADVANCE; TRUST ME, I TRIED. I went to various banks, and finally found one recommended to me by a gal from Australia: Banco Piano in microcentro. It is a comical place on the inside because it looks like an old timey bank...so I thought...is this for real? But it was. San Martín 345/347.

I only went to microcentro and don't know if they do it in all the branches. Here is a list of the branches: http://www.piano.com.ar/sucursales.aspx Notice they have one inside a Sheraton hotel...which might be helpful because I would imagine they have an English speaker on staff if anyone needs one, though this is just speculation.

I do this two ways.

Get a relative to wire me money using Western Union.

Or transfer money to a friend in Argentina's account with paypal. And have him withdraw your money for you.

PayPal databases were hacked on 11/12/2009 and my account with Chase was emptied and went negative as well.. (PayPal payed Skype charges generated in China)

Be careful!
