The oldest son of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro killed himself on Thursday after months of treatment for depression, state media reported. He was 68.

Official website Cubadebate said Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart had been in a "deeply depressed state." A brief note read on state television said his treatment had "required an initial hospitalization then outpatient follow-up."

The oldest son of Cuba's late revolutionary leader was known for his resemblance to his father, earning him the nickname Fidelito or Little Fidel.

His parents divorced before his father Castro took power in Cuba. His mother Diaz-Balart's relatives went into exile, becoming prominent figures in Miami's anti-Castro exile community.

Castro Diaz-Balart began his first studies in Cuba and later moved to the now defunct Soviet Union, where he received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics. In 1974, he also graduated with summa cum laude in Nuclear Physics.

Guess his academic record in Russia was outstanding nevertheless BBC news asked Did Fidel Castro´s Name killed Fidelito?Even when he had become a successful nuclear physicist, he couldn't shake off Fidel's shadow.

His father even once sacked him as head of the island's nuclear programme for "incompetence", showing he was prepared to wield the axe against his own family if needed when it came to putting the revolution first. Fidelitos role ended after the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
