I'm considering taking an assignment to work in BA for a couple of years. I have had a quick scan of the accommodation websites and they're dominated by apartments, most of which dont appear to take pets.

Can anyone provide any advise on where I could find suitable accommodation.

Many thanks

It's Saturday so I guess that it's my turn to answer this question. :)

The short answer: it's not as simple as that. :(

The longer answer: this question comes up several times a week and you need to search through the many threads on this forum that deal with rentals (start with the most recent ones first) and determine, if you don't know already, what your legal status will be, and from that, what will be possible for you and what it is likely to cost.

If you are coming to Bs As on your own initiative it will be far, far simpler to start off with something short-term and temporary while you find your feet and discover what will work for you in the longer term. If you are being sent here from an overseas corporation or you have taken a position with a local firm then in all honesty, the company ought to be doing much more for you than they appear to be doing right now.

I'm sorry if it's not going to be as easy or as cheap as you think. I can only suggest that you have a good, long read on this board, take in other people's experiences and then come back and ask about anything that you might feel hasn't been covered before.

Oh - and good luck!

First, Jogi, Are you looking for a furnished temp-rental apartment for all this time? Or a starter apartment to use for a few months while you look for something more permanent?

My Westie usually travels with me. Before I moved here in 2006, I visited frequently, and I always always found the temp apartment search to be a challenge, but not insurmountable.

First, tell the agent at the rental firm you want to use that you need dog-friendly accommodations, and consider offering double the usual security deposit, which the agency may request in any case.

The better firms will know which of their owners don't object to well-behaved pets. If the agent tells you no pets are allowed in any of their apartments, just contact a different agent. I know www.apartmentsba.com offers some pet-friendly apartments (including one of mine that's unfortunately too small for your family). An excellent small firm that doesn't mind dogs is BA Best Stay, whose owner is a doll and will help you find what you need.

If you're looking for a long-term rental, you have many more complications to resolve than just the dog. You can find a wealth of info on this forum to help overcome the difficulties foreigners face with long-term rentals. Still, owners will respond to cash, either in terms of increasing the rental fee a little or - my preference - offering a largish security deposit. If your dog is well-behaved, you'll get the deposit back. If he's not, the owner deserves some compensation for the extra wear and tear.

Best of luck! If you need help with the temp-rental agencies I mentioned, send me a PM.

It can be difficult to find landlords or rental agents that will accept a dog and rent to foreigners for more than six months at a time unless they have a guarantia. The best chance you may have is to find a foreign owner through this website who will rent to your family and your dog for the two years you plan to be in BA.

Perhaps your employer can "guarantee" a rental contract which might qualify you for a two year lease with a local owner, but you will still have to find one that accepts dogs. Long term (two year lease) apartments are almost always unfurnished, so keep that in mind as well.

.....so you would still face the problem of finding anyone who would accept a dog, even for your initial short term rental.

Actually, googling for alojamientos mascotas buenos aires (and substituting hoteles and hostales for alojamientos for more variety) will pull up a surprising number of places that will accept pets. And the prices will make sure that you spend as little time as possible finding a place for the long term :D

You might consider living in one of the not too far away northern suburbs. Many expat families live there and you might be able to rent an affordable house for your family and dog. The Lincoln School is in one of these towns and caters to expats. The school runs on the same school year calendar as U.S. schools. I knew an American family who lived in the city,a few years ago. Their kids were home schooled and weren't able to meet any local kids. The family left Argentina.

Thank you all for your replies; I will dig a bit deeper in to the forum as advised. If the move is formalised my firm will assign a relocation specialist who I hope will help with the process. At this stage I'm doing some initial research just to see if it’s something that would work for me and my family.

Thanks again and enjoy the weekend
