Coronavirus Recovery Relief

The $1200 dollar gift from our government. The latest word...sure if you file a tax return you get the $1200...but if you use a 3rd party tax preparer you do not get direct deposit...you get a check....and maybe not until June or later. So far- unless they figure out how to change that. I assume this applies to people not on Social Security.

Democrats Abroad has fielded many hundreds of questions from Americans abroad interested in understanding and accessing the support available to us in the CARES Act. We created these FAQs about CARES Act aid and are posting updates to them on an on-going basis. They change from day-to-day (and sometimes include additions and updates more than once a day), so please plan to re-visit them regularly.

IRS Online Tool for Non-Filers
An important milestone was reached in the development of the IRS’s delivery infrastructure for the CARES Act Recovery Rebates. On Friday, April 10 the IRS made public an online tool for non-filers to register for CARES Act aid. Please see our post about the registration tool for non-filers. We have posted the IRS announcement about the online tool in full. The announcement includes information about who should use the tool as well as a link to the tool itself, which is called “Non-filers: Enter Information Here.

Pushing for CARES Act Aid Accessibility
Despite our previous advice to Treasury and the IRS, the system does not currently accommodate non-U.S. bank account numbers. We again have written to Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Rettig making the case for, among other things, an urgent alteration to the system to ensure that aid can reach Americans living abroad in their local bank account.

The IRS announcement also suggests a second online tool will be made available this coming week for taxpayers who have filed but need to provide the IRS with bank account details for the direct deposit of the Recovery Rebate. It will be called “Get my payment” and we will publish information about it as soon as it becomes available. As noted, we have been in contact with Treasury, the IRS, and Congress about the need for this second online tool to also accommodate non-US bank accounts. Please continue to check the Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force Blog for updates.

"Helicopter money are supposed to be dropped from the sky" said Mnuchin in response to Democrats abroad complaints.
