Credit cards: can merchants charge in USD?

Credit card statements here don't state Argentine Pesos. Can merchants charge in USD?
 
Local Argentine Bank Credit Cards statements ? Charges for purchases in Argentina or Abroad.. etc.

The can charge in us dollars if the purchase is in this currency . I have a argentinian credit card and overseas payments are in us dollars .
 
If they can charge in USD then it would state USD, right? If there is no indication of what currency I assume it has to be interpreted as pesos.
