In December, just shy of 3 months after my arrival, I went to Migraciones on Antartida for a proglongacion on my visa. They wouldn't give me the extension as it had been less than 6 months since my previous visa expired. So, I am flying out 5 days from today. Knowing there would be a multa to pay, I went to Aeroparque ahead of time to sort things out. The migracion office is in the building next to departures, just to the right of the car rental places. I waited for almost half an hour with just 5 people in front of me. I have no idea what their issues were that it took so long. Anyway, brief expalanation to the officer, he said it would be 40,000 pesos and they only accept cards in that location, no efectivo. Of course, after almost 4 months with no problems, today my Visa card decided it would take its own little holiday and it didn't work, or maybe it was their machine.

In any event, I had to go back to the departures buildiing, pay the fine at Banco Nacional, get a receipt and wait in line for another half hour. With the receipt verified and papers stamped and printed, I was told I had to travel within 10 days, otherwise this extension would be invalid. No passport stamp. When I come back, I will of course get another 90 days, or 3 months, whichever comes first.

My flight will be sort of early in the morning and I didn't want to deal with this and risk missing my flight because the office wasn't open or there were 100 other people in line. So my advice, if you've overstayed, pay your fine ahead of time, apparently within 10 days of departure to avoid problems on travel day.

The other place I've paid it before leaving was at Retiro bus station. It may be faster than Aeroparque.

I have never had to wait at Aeroparque but I also go a day or two before departure to be safe.
