My DVD/CD drive no longer works on my laptop so, I 'm thinking of getting an external DVD burner. Can I get one here for a reasonable price or should I just buy one on Amazon? If I get one here, will the DVDs I burn with this machine play on the players in the US?

Also, I know the DVD region is different here than in the US. Does that mean I can't buy DVDs here to burn that will play in players from the US? Sorry this might seem obvious to some but I really don't know it. Thanks a lot for your help.

A quick search through these forums will help you decide whether and how you want to buy electronic equipment like this. As for your other questions, the answer, as always is: it depends....

If you are cloning existing original DVDs then assume that the clone will carry the same region code as the original unless your cloning software tells you otherwise. If you are making your own DVDs, expect them to be region-free.

Remember that a computer processes DVD information in a different way from a DVD player + TV so region codes, colour system etc will be ignored when you play a DVD on any computer.

Remember too that most DVD players can be "adjusted" to make them region free and many modern TVs etc will work with a variety of NTSC and PAL standards.

Forget Amazon, you will never get through customs. Go to MercadoLibre or the galleria on Florida. Region codes make no difference for what you are doing.

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate all your help. I haven't decided what to do but might actually try cleaning the laser lens on my laptop first.
