Hi, I'm moving to BA in April. I will need to travel between work (Belgrano) & Spanish school (near Plaza de Mayo & Corrientes/Florida). Is it safe & reasonably fast to take the subway into town at 9 AM? other ideas? thanks. excited!

Yes its safe but at 9AM it will be crowded.

edit: depending on where you are in belgrano it may be faster to take the train to retiro and hop one of the buses to your final destination

What Philip said. If you're near the train station by far the fastest way for you to get there is to take the train and then take a bus. Safety shouldn't be a concern, but it's always advised to keep your valuables tucked away and to keep your eyes open. BA is a city where the need for caution never sleeps (though it might be dozing in the morning).

There are a number of different ways to get there from Belgrano, but at 9 in the morning, all of them will be packed tight like sardine cans. I personally find going to Retiro on the train during rush hour is worse than taking the subway.

But again, either way you'll be packed in there pretty tight. And going to Retiro is not all that safe, especially if you are going to be waiting for a bus outside the station. I do not recommend it.

Taking a subway from Belgrano to Florida will take about 30 minutes, while taking the train could be as much as an hour if you are taking a bus afterwards.

Naw, taking the train to Retiro from Belgrano will take about 15 minutes. When I used to live in Cañitas (and before I knew better) I had a commute to La Boca every day and it took me minimum of 40 minutes on the bus to get downtown, then another 20-30 to catch the second bus and get to Boca. Once I figured out about the train (granted, it wasn't 9am--that will be sardine time no matter what unless she's early on a bus line) I never looked back. I also don't think it's a big deal to catch the bus at Retiro--the good thing is that SO many busses pass through there all the time you're rarely waiting for long. I always find the trains to be less crowded than the subte, and the trains are air conditioned! Much preferred.

Wow we must go on different trains. The air conditioned cars of the mitre are much more comfortable than the D line. And in probably 100 days of commuting I've never felt unsafe at all standing outside of the train station. And I'm sure it would be even less so during the period our op would traveling, you know, surrounded by all the thousands of dangerous upper middle class workers arriving from the northern suburbs to work in the center.
