Getting best value for pesos

I haven't done it yet, but in about two weeks I'm going down to the American Airlines office on Pueyrredon to try so I'll let you know how it goes :)

but one could never then get those miles refunded back into US dollars? I wouldn't really need thousands of dollars (we recently sold our car and could only get payment in pesos) of Frequent Flier miles but it is an interesting idea for smaller amounts.

If you are a member of a bank (HSBC) that has a branch in Buenos Aires, could you deposit pesos into your account and get the current official exchange rate in dollars? any thoughts?

This country is working hard to stop capital flight, no way they'd let you do that.

I'm not sure it would be illegal for them to not accept cash, esp in pesos...

They will say that it is inconvenient for them to handle cash, and hit you with a fee. Iberia introduced ~4.5% "cargo de mostrador" fee if you pay for your tickets in cash.
