Hi guys,

Does anybody have a good ear-nose-and-throat doctor ("otorrinolaringologo") they can recommend?

I moved here two-and-a-half months ago, and have been having trouble with what I think is a flare-up of a recurring problem for me----excess wax-buildup in my inner-ear canals that traps water and produces an infection and/or general discomfort. In the States, whenever I feel excess pressure in my ear, I go to an ear-nose-and-throat doc and he just vacuums the wax out. I've gone through this process two or three times in the past couple years and it always does the trick.

My ear has been giving me trouble again for a couple months now. I've been to three different doctors here and they've all told me, somewhat inexplicably, that they can't see any wax in my ears. The last doc told me that the problem is related to me grinding my teeth while I sleep.

For various reasons----my medical history in this regard being the most obvious----I think that's a misdiagnosis. At this point, I'd be willing to pay out-of-pocket to see a (fourth) doctor and just beg him/her to clean my problem ear out. I really don't want to have to fly back to the States to get this done.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I remember having that procedure done a few years back, when I pretty much experienced the same symptoms u described, the doctor who performed it was Dr. Chinsky who is supposed to be the most experienced otorrino in Baires ( I was referred to him after visiting 5 different otorrinos)

You will have no problem finding him (simple as a search in google) but getting an appointment with HIM may take you a bit longer :D

There's a product that's sold here called "sincerum". It's product that melts earwax that comes in drops and is sold over the counter. I had a problem with earwax a few years back and it did the trick.

I remember going to a specialist in the united states who told me that the whole "vacuuming" thing was an antiquated procedure that no reputable doctors still do because it creates a dependence on the procedure.

If you think you know what you have, and you think you know what to do, why don´t you DIY? If you are looking for a doctor, then it must be because you are not one, right?
So instead of saying you are getting the running around, it might be more accurate to say you would like a second opinion...
Why would any respected professional do what you tell them to do? Only because you are paying?

Is it worth mentioning that medicine isn't just pure science, it's cultural and personal too. Us Brits stereotype French doctors as being obsessed with the liver and the Germans with the bowels (while we are all perfectly normal of course: heaven knows what the French and the Germans think of us!) Yet despite differences in focus, the French and the Germans and the Brits all manage to keep their populations reasonably healthy. So it is with Argentina. I've been diagnosed and treated in Argentina in ways that I wouldn't have expected to come across in the UK. It's different. It works. Roll with it.

My non-medical advice but it's worked for several friends that I suggested this to - buy yourself some agua oxigenada (hydrogen peroxide). Tilt your head so that your ear is facing the ceiling and pour a capful in your ear (dilute with water if you wish). Leave it in until the bubbling in your ear stops - usually between 30 seconds and a minute. The bubbling sensation is the wax being dissolved. Put a tissue next to your ear and tilt your head back upright and let the liquid run out.

Voila, problem solved.

I can vouch for that, it's a good technique.

I've never tried them but there are those ear candles too -- you can probably get one in barrio chino.

However if you're having this many problems, the problem may be you, sorry! Q-tips are actually not great things to use -- you can end up pushing the wax further in -- the ear is a naturally self-cleaning device, the more you try and clean the wax the more you'll produce, and if you push it further in you can end up clogging your own ear. If you get this issue resolved this time, the advice for follow-up from most doctors is stop touching your ears!

I had the wax vacuumed out of my ear here after swimming produced an infection. I went to the hospital on St Martin de Tours I think, just off Libertador. Can't remember the name of the hospital, but you just go to the guardaria and explain the problem. Very nice and professional.
