Have stores stopped asking for DNI's?

Is it just me, or does it feel like many shops who would typically ask for your DNI while at the register have stopped asking for it these last couple of weeks? Or maybe they've given up/ are no longer obliged to request it from people who are very obviously foreigners (such as my dopey self), since they automatically assume we don't have an official DNI to give anyway, and the general system has maybe realized the whole using the passport number in place of a missing DNI is pointless..? But again, maybe it's just my lone coincidental experience?

They still request it but now the contactless payments have become much more common and I noticed lately that sometimes they don’t ask for it. I’m not a foreigner.

I've been giving an invented DNI number for years, when paying in cash. No one has noticed so far.

I've never presented my DNI. I live here for more than a year ahahahh Every time they ask I reply that I don't remember. And they proceed

Likewise and same with a card. I still find it absolutely mental that they still do it here. When talking with friends they can’t believe we don’t have something similar to present in UK when purchasing. My father was recently up in arms about the fact they’ve introduced having to use your ID at polling station back home to vote - never mind for the weekly shop 😂

Its infuriating how much not having a DNI can set you back in Argentina, no mercado libre, no BA bikes and many other restrictions.

> no mercado libre

You don't need a DNI for Mercado Libre. Just for Mercado Pago you do. I don't have a DNI and have made several purchases there. All I needed was a +54 phone number which I obtained at Claro.

As far as supermarkets go, I use self-checkout and enter 00000000

Any time I have tried to sign up it asks for a DNI, think there was a thread about it on here too.
