Health Care in Argentina - Help Please

another recommendation for pfortners (puerrydon branch as well)

I have astigmatism, and thats where my opthamologist told me to go, as they specialise in toric lenses. I have a pair that last me a year or so, and they cost around 700 pesos.

Thanks - will try them.

I have my prescription, but Vertex (the brand I used) isn't sold in Argentina AFAIK. I use disposables which I love.

I will check them out and see what they recommend. I just canceled my insurance (after going up 200% in 18 months) so will be paying out of pocket until my new insurance starts but I don't mind that.

If you're looking to change plans, try CEMIC.

Seem to be a lot cheaper than other health care plans, and the cover looks good. There's also a co-pay option, where you pay a tiny fee (6 to 15 pesos) for each consulation, and the monthly cost comes down even further.

Hey Citygirl -- I have astigmatism, dry eye, etc

For contact lenses, despite 5+ years here, I still pick them up when back in Canada, in 6mos or 1year batches. It's kind of silly of me to do so. Because of my dry eyes I wear 1 day disposables (though sometimes wear a pair for 2 or 3 days cleaning in saline in between)

I wear Johnson&Johnson's 1-day Acuvue moist -- I think you can get these here, I love them, I've been wearing Acuvue for years. My contact lens woman back in Canada wants me to change to Acuvue TruEye but she sent me a sample and they don't sit properly on one eye, so until I go home again I'm going to stick with what I have. My opthamologist here said these lenses I'm on right now though are perfect so no need to change -- TruEye do breathe more than the Moist though.

I believe you'll need a local prescription to get lenses here. I went to the Dr Charles opthomology centre over near Facultad de la Medicina -- very good centre, they're with OSDE, probably with Swiss Med etc as well.

I've been wearing contact lenses for 22 years, I haven't owned a pair of glasses in about 12 years -- glasses were just so expensive and distorted so much that I never used them. However my opthamologist said I should start wearing them again, even if just for a couple of hours a day. I got a prescription in August and then never went ahead and got glasses made -- does anyone know if that prescription is still valid, or are they like other recetas here and "expire" after 30 days?

BTW -- for frame of reference if you buy out of pocket -- my lenses cost me out of pocket about us$1.75 a day (though I get a deduction on the lenses for my taxes)

I'm curious how much they'd cost here, not sure if J&J manufactures in Arg or imports them in...

Thanks Syn! I'll let you know the prices. I'm lazy and was actually going to go to Walmart :)o) as apparently they have the best prices. So maybe I'll check them out and then the other place.

I've always worn the 2 week lenses which actually last a month (my eye doctor in the US confirmed that they're exactly the same, they just want you to throw them out after two weeks to use them up more quickly:mad:). I've worn the Vertex for 5 years or so and they're great but when I checked here a while ago, they didn't have them. But since I am a bit of an idiot and forgot to order new ones on my last trip, I need to get something here as I'm on my last pair.

I have heard many different providers of health insurance mentioned and recommended here - and I can see some do a better job for younger punters and some for us 'more mature' types :) If you were in your 40s (forty something :) lol - what company would you guys be recommending ? I will be down there (permanently) next year - early next year - and I want the best healthcare I can get for my dollar - but I will be on a budget and trying to count the pennies too...

Any and all feedback on this would be great...

Basically - best 'bang for the buck' for an expat in his 40s is what I am after...

Thanks in advance,

Johnno.

Stay FAR away from Plan Salut - Hospital Britanico! It can take weeks to get an appointment. I would imagine that private insurance would be much betterr than public.
