I drink a lot of water. I buy those big 20 liter bottles like the office water cooler size. ($50 Pesos) But sometimes the water guy doesn't come.
So occasionally I end up drinking the regular tap water. I live in a 120 year old building. My neighbors tell me the cold water comes from the street pipes, while the hot water comes from the tanks on the roof. (?) I have no idea how any of this works. I'm just wondering how safe the tap water is.

Sounds like bs. Unless your building has central water heating they probably come from the same pipe. Regardless both the hot and cold water almost surly come from the tank on the roof, street pressure would not get the water up and out of a faucet on more than the second floor.

Either way I was always taught not to drink hot water since the hot water could leach lead from the solder on the pipes.

As for the safety of the tap water? I've been drinking it for 5 years and I'm fine. The oft complained about chlorine smell is proof that it is, at the least, bacteria free.

The Brita Bottle is something I keep around for such a circumstance. Not sure what it really filters out or if arsenic is filtered out. But I always thought it was better than nothing when I was out of bottled water.

Brita is an activated carbon filter. It won't remove arsenic or other dissolved minerals. It will filter out some harmful bacteria but that is taken care of at the treatment plants here with the addition of chlorine. In fact the a brita filter's only benefit is in filtering out the chlorine which is a taste benefit not a health one. It's a nice plus though.

The easiest way to get rid of the chlorine taste is to just let it evaporate -- leave a jug of water out on the counter. Or you can refrigerate, it will just take longer for the process.
