I need a beach

Yes, that sounds wonderful. It's about 80f there now. Our doctors strongly urge us to limit the time we spend in the sun. Is there anything to do, sightseeing, etc outside the resort?
I have not been there personally but have friends that stayed there. Not much to do. But they are huge and have many activities and options.

Highly recommend the beautiful Playas de Este, a stones throw from Havana Cuba. Safe, great people, and a chance to toss a few needed dollars their way.

Years ago I spent some time in San Salvador de Bahia, a colorful, lively town. Parts of it are historical, with many beautiful old buildings.
I remember live music everywhere, great ethnic restaurants, and also street "capoeira: demonstrations, a Brazilian rhythmic mix of dance and judo.

I, too, was there years ago. I stayed outside Salvador near Praia do Forte which was a lovely little beach with a turtle sanctuary. As you say Salvador was a colorful, lively town but the locals projected intense hatred to visitors. They'd glare at us and make small gestures when we passed them in the street or when we drove by. I've been all over the world, including some dodgy places. Salvador is the only place I felt fear. Couldn't wait to get out of there. I hope it's better now.

Would suggest Northern Peru or Ecuador/Montañita. lots of fish, surfing, etc ideal for ex hippies
However for US seniors wouldn't recommend it

I would suggest La Serena/Chile, Close by 2 hour flight, Excellent seafood , great accommodations
