My old phone is about to be locked out of What'sApp. Does anyone know if it can be updated, and who does it?

Here's an article from Cronica newspaper from a few days ago. It list all the phone models effected, also Samsung, LG, Huawei phones.
What it comes down to is what IOS you're using. I have an iPhone SE version 15.7.1. I think I should be OK.

Doesn't going into Settings -> General -> Software Update do anything? Mine checks for updates once I open that menu, Make sure you're connected to WiFi, of course.

Followed your instructions, and a lovely sign popped up on my screen:
"iOS 12.5.6 Your software is up to date"
